… Under the sound of wheels (post-New Year’s banter)

When driving on my Qashqaichik, an incomprehensible sound suddenly formed, some kind of clatter, which happens more often the faster I drive. At first I followed the well-known advice “if you hear a knock, just turn up the volume on the radio”, but then I decided to take a look. It turned out that the front right wheel caught the screw, but he stuck so well that the tire did not flatten. So it was possible to drive until the next change of tires from winter to summer and then already vulcanize, but a better idea came to me.

What does the knock sound like when driving? I’m on a train journey! And it is enough to add 3 more screws, as the sound effect will be indistinguishable, you just need to correctly calculate the place of their introduction. We are looking for schemes, remembering school mathematics.

Each typical passenger car is supported by 2 bogies with 2 axles each, which knock “tuk-tuk-tuk” when they hit the junction between the rails. Let’s take a standard 50-meter R65 rail (rails, it turns out, are indicated not by length, but by the weight of a running meter). We do not consider smaller rails, which are used in terrain changes and near switches, as well as long seamless sections. Let’s superimpose the parameters of the car on the track to calculate all the necessary dimensions.

Now we just need to break the wheel circumference into sections in the same proportion 2400:14600:2400:30600, or 12:73:12:153

On the wheel

Screws must be carefully screwed in the center of the tire, right up to the head. To achieve a stereo effect, you can spread the screws on different wheels, one right and one left.

Now about driving speed. A train (not Sapsan) accelerates to about 90 km/h on long stretches. This means that he passes a 50-meter section in exactly 2 seconds. During this time, the R16 wheel must make exactly one revolution, and the car must pass Pi * 16 * 2.54 = 1.27 meters (16 is the diameter of the wheel, not the radius). Which corresponds to a speed of 2.3 km / h … I’m not sure that the car is capable of driving so slowly. But at least at yards of 20 km/h you will feel like a passenger of a train flying at a speed of 782 km/h!!!

Bon voyage!
