Orange Pi 5, 5B and 5 Plus immediately received 32 GB of RAM. What are these devices?

SoC Rockchip RK3588 is good for everyone, in addition, it supports RAM up to 32 GB. Unfortunately, few companies that produce devices based on this chip present 32 GB versions of their devices. But Orange Pi is just one of those manufacturers who care about their users, presenting more and more productive and functional devices.

Accordingly, Orange Pi 5, 5B and 5 Plus immediately received 32 GB of RAM. Of course, the price has also increased, but nothing can be done about it. Let’s look at the capabilities of single-board devices that have received so much RAM and evaluate their prospects.

Orange Pi 5

Orange Pi 5 not only has everything that the Raspberry has, but also much more, including internal memory. And it’s not just a matter of memory; most of the characteristics of this system are higher than those of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.

Here are the characteristics of the device:

The device has plenty of advantages. Firstly, the size of the device does not exceed the size of a credit card. This is a little more than the “raspberry”, but there are also more possibilities. Secondly, the developers tried to add maximum capabilities with a minimum volume, and they succeeded, as far as one can judge.

According to the developers, the new single-board PC is capable of replacing desktops or nettops with a basic configuration. Of course, single-board is not suitable for solving high-performance problems, but it can solve most basic or mid-level problems.

Well, as an office/home option, the device is quite interesting. For example, you can connect multiple screens to it, which plays an important role for many representatives of the IT industry. By the way, there is not only HDMI, but also DisplayPort 1.4 with a resolution of up to 8K 30 Hz, implemented via the USB-C 3.1 port.

As for the price, it cannot be called low, but it cannot be called very high either.
So, Orange Pi 5 with 8 GB of RAM costs $85. This configuration also includes 32 GB of internal memory, which is enough to install a large number of Linux distributions and other operating systems.

At the same time, the Raspberry does not have built-in memory. Well, if we talk about Orange Pi 5 without internal memory, then the cost of such a model is $75 – the amount of RAM is the same, 8 GB.

As for the single-board with 32 GB of RAM, it costs $159 (you can buy it on Aliexpress or Amazon).

Orange Pi 5 Plus

The developers added Rockchip RK3588 SoC, plus the mini-PC received two HDMI 2.1 connectors, two 2.5GbE connectors, M.2 PCIe.

The most noticeable difference from the previous model is two 2.5 GbE Ethernet ports. There are also two HDMI outputs and one HDMI input, plus the ability to connect a solid-state drive via the PCIe NVMe interface.

As for the processor, this is a chip that is superior to the Rockchip RK3588S, which is used by many Raspberry clone manufacturers. The chip has four high-performance Cortex-A76 cores that operate at up to 2.4 GHz, and four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores (1.8 GHz).

Graphics – integrated, GPU Mali-G610 MP4, with support for OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.2 and Vulkan 1.1. The chip is capable of working with 8K video (7680×4320) at 60 frames per second (H.265/AVS2/VP9/H.264/AV1 codecs). Well, plus – there is also a neuroprocessor unit with a performance of 6 Tops.

As for the cost, there are different options:

  • Orange Pi 5 Plus with 4 GB – $89
  • Orange Pi 5 Plus with 8 GB – $109
  • Orange Pi 5 Plus with 16 GB – $129
  • Orange Pi 5 Plus with 32 GB – $179.
