Tecno introduced a gaming console with AR glasses instead of a monitor. It's cooler than Apple Vision Pro

The spirit of the future

The spirit of the future

Imagine lying on the couch, and in front of your eyes is a 200+ inch TV on which you are playing The Witcher. It will only be cooler to do the same thing on a bus or on an airplane, displaying a virtual screen in front of you and isolating yourself from the outside world. All this can be done with the new Pocket Go glasses from the well-established Chinese brand Tecno. If this is not a revolution in the gaming world, then it is definitely a powerful step on the path of evolution. Especially considering that you will not be wearing a “swimming mask” over your eyes, as is the case with the Apple Vision Pro, but almost ordinary light glasses.

Cheap analogue of Apple Vision Pro

Tecno Pocket Go can really become a serious competitor for Apple Vision Pro among gamers. True, this is not a full-fledged AR headset, although the device itself is called that way. It is rather a portable VR console, but it is very convenient, technologically advanced and compact, so you can take it with you anywhere.

The company presented the new product as part of the event that ended in Barcelona Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024. But this is not just a gaming accessory, but a full-fledged gaming system built into the glasses and gamepad.

Characteristics of Tecno Pocket Go gaming glasses

Tecno Pocket Go is a set of glasses with an AMOLED screen and a wireless gamepad, which has built-in powerful hardware that goes beyond the usual mobile solutions from Qualcomm or MediaTek.

Inside the gamepad there is an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS processor (8 cores and 16 threads) with a frequency of up to 5.1 GHz, AMD Radeon 780M graphics, 16 gigabytes of RAM, a 1 terabyte SSD drive, a cooling system with a fan and three copper tubes, an operating system Windows based system and USB Type-C port for image output. Considering the latter, it is reported that Tecno Pocket Go can be used not only with the included gamepad, but also display images from a smartphone or laptop. The device is powered by a 50 Wh battery, which can be replaced to continue use. But for now it is unknown how much battery life it will provide.

It seems like it's just a gamepad, but in fact it's a full-fledged computer

An important feature of Tecno Pocket Go is that it offers image equivalent to 215″ screen, in front of which you are at a distance of 6 meters. It is not yet possible to install such a TV at home, and even for a projector it is not easy to find a surface with a similar diagonal. And considering that playing on a projector is actually still a pleasure, the glasses become even more interesting. Just imagine playing Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher on a 215-inch screen. What if at this moment you are sitting on a plane?

Are VR and AR glasses suitable for people with poor vision?

Built into the glasses two AMOLED screens with a diagonal of 0.71 inches each. The picture is displayed at a fairly high frame rate – about 60 fps. There is eye position tracking and diopter distortion correction up to 600 degrees. Speakers built into the arms lower volume so you don't have to use headphones separately. There are two buttons on the top of the glasses for control.

Even on a commuter train, you won’t look like a freak wearing these almost ordinary glasses.

It’s especially nice that Tecno Pocket Go allows you to play in a small apartment, in transport or while lying on the sofa. Unfortunately, there is no exact release date for Tecno Pocket Go yet, but They promised to announce the price in 1–2 months. Unlike her Apple Vision Pro is already available for purchaseand they are available, but there is no doubt that the Cupertino gadget will cost much more.

Do you need augmented reality glasses?

Users’ readiness for the transition to the AR era can be called complete. The mere fact that Apple Vision Pro has already collected, according to various sources, more than 200,000 pre-orders at such a high price is already worth something. This is comparable to what folding smartphones showed at the dawn of their appearance, but headsets are a much narrower type of device, which, unlike smartphones, is not objectively needed by everyone.

You can talk about the popularity of various types of glasses by looking at launch of the Oculus Rift headset several years ago, which raised $2.4 million on Kickstarter in just over a month out of a $250,000 goal to launch production. As a result, the company’s lineup now includes several models, and the company itself was bought for $2 billion.

The emergence of games such as Half-Life: Alyx or Beat Saberpushed the industry, and now we have received additional development of the idea with minimal picture delay, a huge “screen” in front of the eyes and other pleasant features.

There is no doubt that headsets will only get better and gain more and more popularity. After all, when the iPhone came out, it was simply impossible to use it without pain—the interface was so inconvenient. But now it has been completed, and we have a full-fledged, high-quality product. By the way, this is largely why iPhone and Android smartphones are so similar now at each other – there is simply one ideal option, different manufacturers are gradually moving towards it, pushing each other.
