Story #1 or how to find your first job in IT?

Top 3 thoughts from ex-Yandexoid, teacher, curator of student projects.

1. Do personal projects and collect them in a portfolio

This is a well-known and proven way to learn a lot. Main find a projectwhich will straight Interesting do it so as not to abandon it after another stupor, but to make a completed project, which you are not ashamed to show later.

Surely you have a hobby, for example, music or cats – great, make a website / tg bot / any interface about them! For example, a selection of cats in 3d models, with stories and quizzes about their features. And let your friends play, get them to love your cats too.

What if there is no hobby? A working option is to find a motivating friend with an idea – and do a project for him, or with him (her).

Target: do It’s clear And Interestingso that anyone who clicks on the link will think WOW.

Well-readable code should, of course, be in the repository. You need to commit regularly so that it is clear that you have not stolen another project and know how to work with git.

2. Grow a network of contacts and talk about yourself

Even 2 years ago, it seemed superfluous to me: “I’m not a blogger.” Yes, we are not bloggers, but we also need to be known.

It is difficult for a person with no work experience to attract the attention of HR on a resume. It’s easier to find a person within the company who will recommend you (“referral” in IT jargon).

Most companies have Linked-in accounts that can be used to find people working in the company. You may well find people in positions of interest to youto get to know them, ask them to refer and/or chat you.

Of course, not everyone will agree. This is normal, not everyone has time, not everyone sees the point in spending it like that. You can offer to work on this person’s personal project for free, for example, testing some hypotheses; at the same time you will learn a lot and you can add a line to your resume.

You, of course, also do not have to agree to everything, there is not enough time. Go to those who offer more interesting tasks, from whom you can learn more.

3. Most important: look for jobs and apply for them

See who needs what in the market. There are many startups that do not have the opportunity to take expensive seniors. Such startups are much more attentive to beginners who have shown independence in their projects.

Found a promising vacancy – apply! Both directly and through other people in the company. Called for an interview – go and train. Every attempt and every experience taken into account brings you closer to the goal.

Yes, the probability of refusal or even non-response is high. But a lot of refusals are not scary, there are many people who get a job from the 100th time, from the 1000th resume submission. IT-specialists are in demand, you have everything ahead of you.

There is an opinion that the job search should be started not after graduation from a university or a bootcamp, but at the beginning, at the same time as studying. Regularly try to find a job and compare yourself with reality.

We have made an alpha version of the @JobbeTgBot telegram bot, which guides through job scenarios in the form of a game. A theoretical part is also required, I plan to conduct it in our channel and here, on the hub. This is the beginning.

Enjoy!
Feedback on the scripts will be very welcome @VuMonk (Kolya) and @Parampayka (Danya) – the students who wrote the bot.
