Microsoft will remove support for Android apps in Windows 11

Bad news for Windows 11 users: Microsoft has announced that it will no longer support the Android subsystem (WSA) as of March 5, 2025.

So yes, Amazon Appstore and all Android apps that depend on WSA will no longer work.

What does it mean?

  • You won't be able to download new Android apps from the Amazon Appstore after March 6, 2024.
  • Existing Android apps installed on your computer will continue to work until March 5, 2025.
  • After March 5, 2025, Android apps on Windows 11 will no longer work.

Why is Microsoft no longer supporting Android apps?

  • Lack of popularity: WSA expectations were not met. Not many Windows 11 users actively used Android apps.
  • Lack of Google Play Store: Without access to the Google Store, WSA's functionality was limited.
  • Competition with Apple: Microsoft may have decided to focus on developing its own apps to compete with Apple M1 and iOS apps on macOS.

What to do if you are using Android apps on Windows 11?

  • Find alternatives: Consider whether there are web or Windows versions of the Android apps you use.
  • Switch to another device: If you need Android apps, you can use a smartphone, tablet, or Chromebook.
  • Install an emulator: Windows and macOS have an Android emulator with low system requirements. The downside is that there is no support for Apple Silicon processors.

This decision by Microsoft may disappoint users who were waiting for full integration of Android into Windows. We can only hope that Redmond will offer an alternative solution for running APK files on their system in the future.
