How is the IT business in Russia?
It seems that the harsh 2022 has been hard on all civilian sectors of the economy. The information technology sector also faced new challenges. World IT leaders left the country, limiting the use of their software products, including Microsoft, IBM, Adobe, Apple. Specialists left: according to the Ministry of Digital Development, in 2022, about 100 thousand industry workers left Russia.
Despite all the difficulties, the IT industry at the end of 2022 continues to please with its success. Let’s try to figure out whether this is so, using the data of the Federal Tax Service.

At the end of 2022, the profit of operating IT companies in Russia exceeded 775 billion rubles, which is 22% more than a year earlier. Slightly less than the increase in 2020 – then the figure increased by 43% – but still impressive.
The sector earned five trillion rubles in revenue. Nearly 75% of operating companies showed a profit. A year earlier, in 2021, the share of such companies was 70%. On the one hand, Russian companies and owners got a part of the market, which international divisions left last year. On the other hand, there are also internal reasons for growth in the sector. Among them: an increase in the volume of government orders, increased demand for information security programs, growing digitalization and industry support measures.
Field of activity
When talking about the most successful companies in the information technology sector, the owners of well-known Internet portals immediately come to mind: Yandex, Vkontakte, Avito (KEKH EKOMMERS LLC). In 2022, they were again in the top 10 most profitable IT enterprises in the country.

Region
Depending on the region, IT companies also receive certain benefits. Traditionally, half of them are registered in Moscow and St. Petersburg – closer to big business and decision-making centers. As of the end of 2022, almost 30 thousand companies in the sector worked here. In total, in Russia, according to the results of the reporting period, there were 75 thousand of them.
The capitals are followed by Tatarstan, Novosibirsk and Sverdlovsk regions. There are more than 2,000 registered companies in each of these regions, and 100 more have opened in 2022. The Krasnodar Territory is a consistently popular location for programmers.
In the reporting period, the number of IT companies in the Smolensk region increased noticeably (by 15%): from 401 in 2021 to 462 companies a year later. It is possible that the support measures announced by the regional authorities in the spring of 2022 played in favor of choosing a place for registration. An accelerator has been launched in the region, which helps to develop information technology startups free of charge, and preferential lending terms are provided.
In general, the information technology business is represented in all parts of Russia, even three Russian companies write software in Baikonur. Another 5 pieces were opened in new territories: the LPR, the DPR and in the Zaporozhye region.
In addition to Moscow and St. Petersburg, the most successful regions in terms of the average profit per IT company in 2022 were the Nizhny Novgorod, Kaliningrad and Novosibirsk regions. In the Kaliningrad region, the high rate is mainly due to the income of a grocery startup “Innoseti”, his profit amounted to 4.6 billion rubles. Presence of registered intellectual property
Perhaps the measure of success for companies in the sector is registered intellectual property. According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Rospatent, as of the end of 2022, more than 32 thousand computer programs and 9.7 thousand trademarks in the IT industry were registered in Russia. At the same time, financially successful IT companies register programs and trademarks many times more often than unprofitable ones.
About software registration
Registration of software with Rospatent (Open Register of Software and Databases) and Mintsifra (Unified Register of Russian Programs) is not mandatory, but it helps to protect the rights of the copyright holder and provides a number of advantages. A company can register one program in two registries at once – Rospatent and Mintsifra.
The process of registering a program with Rospatent is an additional measure to protect the rights of the copyright holder and, in fact, is a deposit of the code. It is a simpler procedure than registering a program in the Unified Register of Russian Software.
The registry of Russian software provides a number of advantages to companies that hold rights, including when participating in public procurement, and from 2021 it also allows you to receive a VAT exemption.

Gender of the leader
The gender of the head of an IT company does not affect the success of the business in any way, although the information technology industry seems to be “male”, meanwhile, the share of female managers and business owners is about a quarter of the total and has remained within these limits for the past few years. In the top 100 IT companies by profit in 2022, the share of women CEOs is smaller, only 12 companies in the list were under their control.

In 2022, the Russian IT market, despite the turbulent situation, not only did not sink, but also achieved significant success: the trend for revenue and profit growth continues. A variety of companies – from owners of Internet portals to aggregators and software contractors – have earned billions in profits. At the end of the year, most of the operating companies remained in the black.
The geography of IT presence in Russia has expanded, the number of players in the market has grown. This, among other things, was facilitated by regional and federal measures to support the information technology business.
