English for the loser: the bad advice of designer Petit

There are tons of articles on the Internet about how and why you need to learn English. All of them are more or less similar. If you read one, then you read it all at once. Boredom, in general.

But try to use English as a real loser! Here you need to hoo how to try. Here we have gathered some tips for you, but for now, get to know a true guru who kindly agreed to keep us company and talk a little about English. Meet designer Petya!

Petya is the most ordinary designer in the most ordinary IT company. He studied English for 8 years at school and another 4 years at university. Therefore, he believes that he knows him quite well. In any case, the joke “London is the capital of Great Britain” understands and even laughs from it.

Yes, we are aware that these are Flanders. He kindly agreed to help us and play the role of designer Petit, so we thank him for that.

English is like riding a bicycle! Once you have learned, you will never forget everything. And if something suddenly falls out of memory, that is, Google translator and multitran, and the phone has Internet access. A couple of seconds – and everything in openwork. So Petya thinks so. Therefore, in principle, does not go to courses. There is nothing to do there – and a lot of time will be spent on them. It’s better to learn a new feature in design.

Petya needs English only for work, and even that is pretty infrequent. That is, the office has customers from the United States who send TK to the site or identity design. Naturally, in English. But why strain? Just Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V to the translator. Though it is crooked, but it is quite possible to understand what foreigners want there.

True, edits are often sent. Like, it’s not so written in the statement of work, do that, and because of this, the project manager is frightening to Petya. Says: “What, you can’t read TK normally? It is clearly written there! ”And you cannot prove what is wrong there – like peas against a wall. Once, because of such a customer, Petya even lost the prize. TK does not know how to write, and all the bumps are Pete. That is why Petya does not like to work with foreign customers.

Petya is also envious of his colleague Kolya. Petya is trying to learn new chips in design, to improve, but for some reason Kolya has time before. It turns out that Kolya is constantly praising his bosses for innovation, he even gives extraordinary prizes! And Petya, it turns out, only pulls himself up from behind.

But how is this if Petya follows professional sites and immediately takes up the development of designer pieces and techniques as soon as the guides on them are published in Russian. As Kolya does before, Petya cannot understand! “I suppose the boss licks,” he thinks.

But okay, enough about the job. In his free time, Petya loves films. Therefore, you can talk about cinema with him. Petya especially loves high-budget American TV shows. Excellent graphics, plot, visual effects – everything is on top.

And most importantly – dubbing is almost always studio, professional. And sometimes they will advise some movie or a series not too well-known, and one and a half people translated it. Yes, and those one and a half, either just finished the first year of the theater, or simply their hands are growing from the wrong place. No viewing pleasure. But it’s even more enraging when colleagues during lunch begin to discuss a new series of a cool series that has not yet been translated into Russian! At such a moment, Petya demonstratively goes to lunch near the computer so as not to hear spoilers and not spoil his viewing experience.

Petya loves to travel. He has spent the summer holidays in Turkey for the past few years. Sea, sun, beach, all inclusive, and even in most hotels the staff speaks Russian. Petya is very uncomfortable if you have to remember your knowledge of English. Once, however, he got into a hotel where no one knew Russian at all. And as luck would have it, there were almost no Russian speakers. I had to talk scanty English phrases all week and constantly climb into the phone for a dictionary. The horror is simple, not rest, but hard labor.

Yes, and in Europe, Petya prefers to travel with friends so that there is someone to talk to. And the locals mostly speak only in coffee houses and restaurants, and even that goes by with rather short phrases like “coffee and sandwich, pliz.” Petya’s level of English is quite enough for this, and he was not going to discuss the philosophical currents of the Renaissance with the British.

However, Pete also does not need to improve his accent. And so they will understand, if necessary.

Petya is very unhappy, without an IELTS certificate, the boss does not agree to raise his salary. Like, in an international company, all employees should know English well so that they can work directly with the customer at any stage of cooperation: from a direct meeting with the customer and discussing the project to working with minor changes without the participation of the project manager.

In Slack work chats, almost all chat conversations are mainly in English – the state has freelancers from different countries. Pete sets all the tasks for the PM, so he almost does not follow working chats. Therefore, it happened that he was missing important information, because of which he had to do a lot of unnecessary work. But this could happen to everyone, right?

Sometimes disagreements with the immediate bosses go so far that Petya begins to look for another job. And even somehow sent a resume to competing offices. He received not so many callbacks, but he did go to a few interviews. Only when HRs learn that English is not “fluent”, then they immediately offer a salary at least a quarter lower. This upsets Petya, because he is a designer, not a linguist. And international IT companies completely ignored his resume, did not even call. Therefore, he does not leave his former place.

From time to time, Petya thinks to pass the IELTS certificate, but does not want to spend money on classes with the teacher. Therefore, he selects methods of study on the Internet. But not specialized training sites, but somewhere like Lifehacker.

Having chosen one technique, he practices for several weeks in the evenings, but sees that there is no special result – and moves on to the next. This has been repeated several times already. As a result, Petya decided that he simply did not have the ability to learn foreign languages, if not one of the methods used was suitable for him.

Recently, he does not even try to improve his knowledge of the English language, limiting himself only to the excuse that languages are not given to him.

Do not be like Petya, learn English normally!
