Who implements IPv6 – from companies to entire countries

The official launch of the sixth version of the protocol took place eight years ago. Almost immediately, telecom operators and Internet providers began to use it – the Australian Internode, the Dutch XS4ALL, the German Deutsche Telekom, as well as the American AT&T and Comcast. The latter have a share of IPv6 traffic today exceeds 60%, while Deutsche Telekom – 35%.
A bit later, site owners joined telecommunications companies. Now working with IPv6 supports about 20% of the resources from the list of Alexa 500. If we talk about all the sites on the network, then this figure will be less – 16.3%. IT companies, such as Google and Facebook, are also transitioning to IPv6. Since 2018, more than half of U.S. social network users works with the new protocol. Facebook’s IPv6 traffic is growing in Asia – Vietnam and Taiwan.

IPv6 is also being implemented by government and research organizations. Back in 2010, CERN started to deploy virtual machines that support the new protocol — their total number has exceeded 130 thousand. Although the amount of data transferred remains small – per day through IPv6 networks in the organization passes 2.5 GB of traffic.
IPv6 is being promoted even at the UN. One of the organization’s units proposed migration plan for government agencies. Although we note that the IT community criticized this initiative, primarily because the developed model brings IPv4 problems to a new shell.

What about regulation
The new generation protocol is promoted not only by IT companies and telecoms, but also by individual governments. Thus, Belarus became the first country in the world to consolidate IPv6 support at the legislative level. From the beginning of the year, all Internet providers are required to start working with the new protocol. So far with IPv6 works about 15% of users, although periodically this figure increases to 30%. It can be expected that these values will only grow.

Similar initiatives exist in the United States. At the beginning of March, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published a document according to which at least 80% of the resources of state organizations should start supporting IPv6 by the end of 2025. By the way, the US government has been implementing the new protocol since 2005. However, the process is slow, as ministries cite security problems and potential disruptions in public services. The 2020 document can turn the tide and predetermine the growth in the number of sites using the new protocol.
