Tricks of Employment in IT

Friends, I want to immediately voice the message of my articleit is not about how to deceive the employer, but how sometimes it is possible and necessary to cheat in order to get an interview and get a job, and then work honestly.

And the second message, more for recruiters and those who conduct those interviews.

My judgments are based solely on personal experience in IT, for 10 years in such companies as: Mail Ru Group, Badoo, Rambler Group, Positive Technologies, Wildberries, two Banks and other large companies.

I never worked more than a year in one place, and sometimes I worked two jobs at the same time and officially, without higher education.

Starting from a technical support position at the age of 20, ending with a DevOps team leader at 32, and in general, this is perhaps the most interesting direction for me: Kubernetes, containerization, automation and optimization of development processes and DevOps practices.

How to start in IT, without education and experience…

Surely, many residents of Russia have heard that IT people earn a lot while sitting at home remotely, some people just get angry and infuriate, but they themselves continue to work in their field at an unloved job, while others want to try, but they do not have the opportunity to enter the university, and in their city or the region as a whole, there is no need for IT specialists. For example, one of my friends lives in a distant region and within a radius of 500 km there are not even close suitable vacancies, educational institutions, and from work only Agricultural / State Farm, fields and meadows …

I won’t write about the uselessness of paid courses in this case, and in general I’ve gone off topic … Therefore) The easiest way is to start with technical support, either remotely or in a company, you yourself studied or completed courses, but without actual experience, few people need youin order to gain experience, you need to start working, but how without experience?

1) We look at those vacancies for which you think you have enough minimum knowledge to work, we look at what knowledge is required there.

2) We look at resumes of people with work experience that correspond to these vacancies.

3) We draw up a conditionally junior resume for the vacancies that you are interested in, taking someone else’s resume as a basis, be sure to write any completed higher education there, be sure to write there 1.2 years of work experience of any little-known company in the position you want.

4) We respond with our resume to vacancies that are of interest to you.

5) Think in advance about answers to questions that HRs may ask you, such as: why did you leave your last job, how much do you want to receive, what did you like and dislike at your previous job, and other banal questions.

6) If you coped and passed the first phone call with the HR, you will be called for those interviews. If you are just at the beginning of your career, you may fail the first 10+ of those interviews, you will look ridiculous, stupid and not very)

But these 10+ of those interviews will give you the main, namely the questions that you are asked, 90% of all technical questions for positions: technical support, system administrators and DevOps engineers are the same. Of course, there are exceptions and really interesting interviews, and I had quite a few of them, but most often they ask the same questions that you can write out for yourself, and the answers not to memorize, but to understand themread, watch videos, spend a week, a month and continue to pass the interview.

Firstly, you will deepen your initial knowledge in this way, and secondly, you will be able to get a job, and in the process of work it is much easier to learn.

Why is it necessary to cheat about higher education if it is not there, or experience?

Your resumes are primarily viewed by HRs, not technical specialists, although there are exceptions, and they most likely will not even pay attention to a resume that states that there is no higher education, and if there is also no experience …

Of course, this applies only to commercial companies, in the public sector with such an approach it is useless to respond to vacancies, you will lose time.

And in fact, for the most part, commercial companies don’t care if you have a higher education or not, but experience is extremely important, and if you don’t have it, it’s better to write it, most likely they won’t check it, for initial positions for sure, you could work under a GPC agreement, you could work part-time, in gray, in white, even in green, come up with your own story for as long as your imagination lasts. The main thing is that you have at least the minimum knowledge for work, if you are hired and you can safely grow and develop.

About tougher tricks, like working at two jobs in parallel:

Here, in fact, everything already depends on you, and what you really want from work: to be a good specialist, to gradually grow and develop, to be in demand and a real specialist.

Or, you have your own goal and a deep understanding of plans for the future, and everything else is a method to achieve this goal. And then, no matter how many times you lie, how many jobs you change and what tricks you have to go for. For example, the goal is to earn N – money in 5 years.

Working at one job, you will most likely be promoted 2-3 times maximum during this time, and in money you will win + 50% maximum of the initial salary.

But you can get a job in technical support, for example, at first, even with zero knowledge, in a normal company if you work day and night, delve into all issues, communicate with admins, try to deploy something yourself at home, and not just do your tasks.

After a year of such work, labor and perseverance, you can try to move to another company as admins, and this is already at least + 100% of the money to the salary. Then look at what technologies you are interested in, and try to delve into them as much as possible, then we change jobs in a year to a higher position or to vacancies with a higher salary.

From personal experience I can saythat this case is as working as possible, and having gained experience in one job, you can leave in a year for a higher position but in another company, firstly, when changing jobs, you will have three months to use the term, during which you are usually not pressed, but immersed in project, as a rule, this time you can work for 2-3 hours a day, and the rest of the time you can do your own business, or a second job, your own project, or anything in general)

Here the question arises, who needs an employee who changes jobs every year, if you have 3 years of experience and you have changed 3 jobs, it will still work, but if you have 10 years of experience and 15 jobs, like …… )))

As I did, I actually worked in all the companies that I listed at the beginning of the article, somewhere I worked for 8 months, and somewhere for 3, for some a year. But when I posted a new resume and looked for a new job, I always listed no more than 3-4 jobs for 10 years of experience.

And accordingly stretched the time of work, conditionally Badoo – 3 years, instead of a year, etc.

What we have in fact: it’s bad to do so …

The horizon of knowledge due to the experience of working in large top companies is huge, different stacks, different teams, managers, atmosphere.

When you passed those interviews and submitted documents for registration, personally, never in 10 years, there was a situation where they would say to me: Dear Dmitry, your resume indicated 3 companies in which you worked, and in your employment 33 … It was extremely rare that a situation arose when, during registration, after the words: I forgot my diploma when moving, he would have been asked again, after starting work.

Conclusion

I do not urge anyone to do this, and most will condemn this approach …

Am I a good specialist after such manipulations? Undoubtedly, yes, I have always tried to fill in all the gaps in knowledge, to go deeper and thoroughly understand what I do, because it is interesting to me, my eyes burn and I spend an infinite amount of time on it. But I also love money and value time, so I never wanted to develop within the same company, when you filled in the gaps with a new job, you need to do tasks, there is a routine and a gradual deepening into the topic, and it is much more important for me to study and deepen on my own in what I am specifically interested in, and most importantly, in a new place there is always a huge salary gain and a trial period, during which you can spend time on yourself.

Am I a good employee for companies? Definitely NO, will they hire me after this article with a real name, 99% that they don’t.

Why did I write it then? So that it was not possible to return to employment, I went to my goal for a long time, and now I can burn bridges.
