How to become a systems analyst in 2024

From the moment I started doing data processing in databases, it took about six months before I got my first job as a systems analyst. It took another two years to achieve a significant position in a large fintech company, but more on that later.

I spent a lot of time studying YouTube tutorials and too much money on useless courses. I often ask myself: “Where would I start, knowing all this?” And that’s what this article is about: I’ll spare you the unnecessary stuff and show you the most effective path from zero to the position of a systems analyst.

Where to begin?

Looking for the best course? No. Watch training videos on YouTube? Also no.

First step – to make a plan. Go to the site hh.ruto determine what we need, and write down soft and hard skills in a notepad.

Tip #1: Keep it simple

You don't have to be a genius to get an internship. Middles and seniors are the same people as you, just their list of skills is a little longer than yours.

We study vacancies and record soft and hard skills. Take a look at this list, maybe you already know something from it? Great.

Now that we understand what we need to work on, is it time to buy courses? No.

Second step – we study YouTube and technical literature. Look at the first thing you see on your list of skills. This will be enough for a general understanding. Then, after watching, you will have questions or a desire to never think about SA again. Are you faced with one of the options? Great, that means we are moving in the right direction.

So you have a list of questions. Is it time to buy courses? No.

Tip #2: Finding a Mentor

Personally, I am against courses because of excessive theory and lack of feedback. Courses also create a false sense of progress. When you purchase a course, you may feel like you've made a significant step forward, but in reality, you're shifting responsibility to the course owner. There is an illusion that purchasing a course is already a big step, and the rest can be put off until later. It's best to find a mentor who can help you with specific issues.

Third step – find a mentor among your friends or contact to me for help. I have experience in mentoring and a guarantee of bringing it to an offer. This way, you will receive personalized support and a clear understanding of exactly what you need, with a specific plan and list of questions.

Practical training

I recommend setting aside 1-2 months to prepare for your internship search. Don't be overloaded with courses. It is best to work with a mentor, solve problems, draw diagrams and describe technical tasks.

When you realize that systems analysis is your passion, move to the platform hh.ru and fill out a resume for an internship. Then apply to all suitable vacancies, contact recruiters on LinkedIn, look for internships on social networks.

Tip #3: Don't give up

Don't be discouraged if it takes a few months. Don't quit your job, update your resume and keep looking. Believe me, new opportunities will open up for you and you will achieve your goals.
