“Will they choose the content for me too?” How a smart recommendation system gives students learning tips

The sixth launch takes place in the spring of 2021 design and educational intensives of the University 20.35: students from 40+ universities united in teams around their own ideas or business tasks from companies and develop technological solutions. It sounds cool, but in practice it is even better. In three months, the participants go from the idea of a future product to its prototype: they get acquainted with experts from the NTI markets, pitch the first versions of solutions at the hackathon, get acquainted with other participants from universities from all over the country, from Arkhangelsk to Vladivostok. As a result, each team gets the opportunity to develop the idea further: to defend term papers or theses on the topic of the project, receive support from the university, enter accelerators, look for grants and investors, and participate in conferences.

So for several years and waves, well-known projects have already been born in intensives portable disinfection system for public transport, taxis and car sharing or applications for determining the disease in plants by photo

In addition to project work, all participants have access to the online space of continuous learning from educational kits and online courses… Today, the approach “I don’t know, this was not in the program, I have paws” is more and more puzzling, so intensive students immediately learn to think in the logic “I need to learn something in order to take a step of development”. Until this spring, the participants built an individual educational trajectory, either using the materials of the University at 20.35, or independently looking for the necessary courses, lectures, books. But who said that the Lifelong Learning system cannot be pumped even more? After all, it is more and more difficult to make a conscious choice every day, especially taking into account the increased volumes of content on remote sites: the number of open tabs is becoming disproportionate to the knowledge gained.

Smart recommendation system: it will find, choose, suggest

University platform 20.35 can automatically select and recommend educational content based on

  • the topics and goals the user wants to focus on,

  • tasks recorded in Trello or MS Teams task trackers.

All participants receive clear guidance on how to write down their goals so that with each new request, the system continues to learn and develop. The more accurately and in more detail the problem is formulated, the easier it is for the algorithm to find something really needed.

The system already knows how to pull text from:

  • Trello kanban board cards and MS Teams planner – teams work in them, marking their progress in the columns “To do”, “Doing” and “Done”;

  • messengers (slack, discord, zulip) – communication spaces;

  • section “Development Focuses” on the University platform 20.35 – while working on a project, everyone may come across areas that are unfamiliar to him and are interesting to study, for example: agile or UX / UI design. With the help of “Tricks” the user purposefully fixes what he wants to learn by adding special tags from the thematic areas to the post.

Using machine learning, the system analyzes requests and tasks and automatically pulls content from both closed libraries available at U20.35 and open resources.
