Why should an IT specialist go to Yekaterinburg

Ekat, Ekb, Eburg and Kater – Yekaterinburg has many unofficial names. And recently, they added the “Center of the vile liberota” and “City of Demons” – the titles that the odious journalist Vladimir Solovyov awarded the Ural capital. No matter how you feel about the propagandist, he is definitely right about one thing – the city is different from all others in Russia. We tell you why it is worth visiting for everyone who (for a while?) put aside the idea of relocation and is going to build a career in Russian IT.

Entertainment all year round

Ekaterinburg stands on the border of Europe and Asia, so it has everything at once. In winter, you can go snowboarding or downhill skiing – there are a lot of suitable slopes and modern ski resorts near the city: Ezhovaya, Pilnaya, Volchikha. And Uktus is completely located in the city. In summer – kayaking on the Chusovaya River or conquering local lakes on yachts (yes, land-based Yekaterinburg is considered the capital of yachting, it even has its own regatta). All year round – hiking in picturesque natural places (look into the natural park “Deer Streams” or ride to Bazhovskie places near Sysert). Those who want to get the most out of every season of the year will definitely not be bored in Yekaterinburg.

A lot of tasty food

What good IT person doesn’t love to eat delicious food? Experienced travelers admit that there are no such number of cool cafes and restaurants as in Yekaterinburg, even in Moscow. For delicious food, we advise you to look into the “Tours”, for beautiful views – in the “Vertical” on the 54th floor of the “Vysotsky” or in “BarBoris”, where they feed according to the recipes of Naina Yeltsina. And to taste the real taste of Yekaterinburg, go to Uralmash in Mangalych. This shawarma restaurant is amazing with a grandiose line of people who want to eat that line up to it at any time of the day. Get ready to spend half an hour waiting – at the same time soak up the legendary atmosphere of the most famous district of the city.

Yekaterinburg – the city of free people

Rebels and rebels have long settled in Yekaterinburg (though sometimes not on their own initiative). It is in Yekaterinburg’s blood to defend one’s opinion, one’s point of view. Suffice it to recall the “battle for the square” in 2019, when the townspeople defended their favorite vacation spot from the construction of the temple. After her, the title “City of Demons” stuck to Yekaterinburg. The excellent self-irony of the townspeople turned this boorish epithet into a meme, and some even released a merch of the same name. By the way, a stone’s throw from the square is the same Yeltsin Center. This is not only a museum of the first president of Russia, but also a platform for public discussions, conferences and concerts. And the Piotrovsky bookstore, located right there, has long been chosen by bibliophiles of all stripes – here you can not only find a rare book, but also have coffee with fellow minds.

Oldfags will remember that Yekaterinburg is the capital of Ural rock and the birthplace of Ural dumplings. But life on “Chayfy” and “Agatha Christie” did not end. Theatergoers should definitely go to the Kolyada Theatre, the Opera House and the TsSD (Center for Contemporary Drama). Music lovers – to visit the Night of Music. For one night, the whole city turns into a huge concert venue with hundreds of stages, where both local bands and visiting world-famous stars perform. The event ends at dawn, when thousands of citizens gather together to sing in unison “The Ray of the Golden Sun” – the unspoken anthem of the festival. Fans of contemporary art are advised to take a guide and walk through the objects of two street art festivals that take place in the city every summer: the official Stenograffia and the illegal Carte Blanche.

Unusual architecture

A cacophony of architectural styles and trends – this is how Yekaterinburg can be characterized. Glass skyscrapers in the very center are adjacent to pre-revolutionary ruins, and any resident of the city will proudly point you to constructivist buildings – the legacy of the post-revolutionary era. And there is Vysotsky, a skyscraper with 54 floors, which for a long time was the tallest building in Russia outside of Moscow. From the Vysotsky observation deck, you can see the city, and there are many worthy IT companies in the building itself. By the way, everything is very good with IT in the city.

Professional perspectives

Of course, not a single article about IT in the Urals is complete without mentioning Kontur, the largest Russian developer of solutions for business and accounting. Kontur is a real giant who has been included in the ratings of the best employers several times. The company builds modern offices for its employees, holds major conferences and seriously invests in the creation of the IT community as a whole. Yekaterinburg is also famous for the Naumen company, which develops solutions in the field of digital infrastructure management, client communications and service. Today, the company’s products are used by more than 200 million users from Russia, Europe and Asia. There is also a Yandex development office in Yekaterinburg, in which some of its services are completely created. Tinkoff development offices are located in the same building as Yandex. As a result, other large and small IT companies have to compete and offer IT professionals better and better conditions for work and development.
