Vivaldi 3.7 – Race for the Stars

73 kilometers per second. It is at this rate that the Universe is expanding, per megaparsec. And this is the most recent data published by astronomers a few months ago. Previously, it was believed that galaxies scatter with an acceleration of 67 kilometers per second, but no – much faster. Perhaps it was this news that influenced our developers, who decided – “We need to speed up!”, And today we present a new version of the Vivaldi 3.7 browser. Improved and accelerated.

You can go faster too

It’s no secret that the most frequent user request has always been “Can you make the browser a little faster?” Well, that is, with each version it already works more lively than its predecessor, but you always want something more. Why bother with milliseconds and percentages – let’s just do it twice! So that, so to speak, it was noticeable with the naked eye. No sooner said than done. In today’s version of Vivaldi, new tabs are opened twice as fast as in the previous version (according to internal tests *).

* All tests were conducted on a computer running Ubuntu 18.04 with a 2 GHz Intel Core i3 processor and 4 GB of RAM.

Such acceleration will be noticeable even without the special instruments that astronomers use. Considering how many times a day we have to create new tabs, we can even dream of how much free time we will now have. Or how many additional pages you can view by saving on opening new tabs. All in all, we hope you enjoy this kind of work.

But that is not all. To create new tabs, you must first open a browser window. And science has proven that this also takes time. And since there is a window opening time, then it can be shortened. Well, to begin with, at least not by half, but by a quarter. This is also a noticeable change. Try experimenting for yourself – in today’s version of Vivaldi, new windows open faster. In our internal tests, the browser window creation time was reduced by up to 26%.

In general, the speed of application work directly depends on the hardware on which all the software is launched, so PC manufacturers always try to please us with new developments. In particular, Apple began to release computers with the new M1 processor, built on the ARM architecture. Cars are fast, beautiful, all users like it. And now you can enjoy them even more – today’s version of Vivaldi 3.7 gets along well with the new processors. Moreover, the browser works on these computers up to two times faster than on previous models. This is especially noticeable when watching videos on Youtube – in fact, everything is accelerated twice.

However, we never tire of repeating that the speed of a browser is not only about how quickly something opens or moves. The browser does not work by itself, but bundled with the user. And therefore, it is very important to provide convenient settings and options that allow you to reduce the number of body movements to complete a particular task. And here we also have something to show.

Save mouse clicks

Have you ever counted how many mouse clicks you have to do in a day? And you better do not count – you will be shocked. And if you also estimate how much time it takes for each click, then it immediately becomes clear where whole years of life disappear. We need to do something about it. And we do it, and now we show it to you.

For example, what could be better than a couple of clicks? That’s right – their complete absence. Why click something when the browser can provide automatic operation? In the past, you would add a news website to your web dashboard and then constantly manually update it, wasting precious mouse clicks. This is over – we have added the ability for web panels to enable auto-update with a user-selected frequency. And the content of the sites is constantly up-to-date, and the saved mouse clicks can be put aside.

And you can also fit the whole process of tidying on the tab bar into the already mentioned couple of clicks. For example, you have opened three hundred pages of different pages, they are all messed up and now it is not clear where the important news is, and where there is something about work. Open the context menu on any tab and select the “Group by domain” item. After that, all tabs related to a specific domain will be collected together and neatly stacked into groups. Even if there are a dozen of such domains. And just a couple of clicks.

As you can see, there are more and more opportunities to reduce mouse use, and the clicks saved can be spent on something important. Well, I don’t know, take a mortgage, for example. Or give it to someone for their birthday. Such an unusual but valuable gift.

And also in Vivaldi there are quick commands (this is on the F2 key, who does not know). And in these commands, now the search has become much more convenient due to the fact that the search word in the search results is highlighted in bold, which allows you to quickly find the required command.

There are many changes from the previous version, you can view the entire list at this page… And I would also like to say a few words about the mobile version of Vivaldi for Android, which has also been updated to number 3.7 today.
