Vivaldi 3.3 – Taking a break from work

Hello, Habr!

After reading the title, you might think that the developers of the Vivaldi browser are tired and decided to take a short break from work. But do not be alarmed – the Vivaldi developers are not only not going to rest, they are even increasing the pace of development of our favorite browser, and today’s release is a confirmation of this. The new version of Vivaldi for desktops has several very interesting and useful new products, and the main one is related to a pause in work. But not ours, but yours – after all, the new function is intended for users and implemented at their request. So let’s talk about everything in order.

How to distract yourself from work in one click

In the new version of Vivaldi, an unusual button has appeared, located in the lower left corner of the browser window. It works very simply. When you click on it, all content disappears from the screen, all media files stop playing, and the user gets the opportunity to switch to another type of activity in order to relax, do other tasks not related to the computer or the Internet, or just take a break from daily routine tasks for a while.

It is also possible to return to work in one click – using the same button.

This function is convenient and useful, no doubt about it. But in the new version of Vivaldi, there are other novelties that are no less useful and convenient, and even, perhaps, more valuable for a comfortable and safe network experience. And these innovations concern the address bar – one of the main tools for web browsing.

New URL features

It’s no secret that there are many scammers on the Internet trying to drag you into their website. Often they use addresses with elements of other websites in the URL, thereby misleading the user: he thinks that he came to the page of a popular and respected service, but in reality he ended up on a fraudulent page. To mitigate this risk, we have introduced a new way of displaying the URL in the new version of Vivaldi – now the main domain will be highlighted in brighter font, which will allow you to easily identify which site you are actually on.

Additionally, we took care of those cases when the address is too long, and the address bar is too short, while the actual domain name in the URL is displayed in truncated form and the user may accidentally miss the fact that he has already ended up on a fraudulent site. Now the Vivaldi browser will warn you that not the entire address is visible in the address bar using a special icon:

Another innovation in the address bar will be useful for those who value their time. It is enough to hover the mouse cursor over the URL in the address bar while holding down the Ctrl key (or Cmd / ⌘ for MacOS) to select part of the address and go to it:

A few more improvements added thanks to user requests.

The built-in ad and tracking blocker now supports blocking the entire page. Users who add their own rulesets can now use the parameter document in the rules to block entire pages. This is a step towards greater compatibility with the uBlock Origin ruleset.

Another popular request is the ability to drag Speed Panel cells to folders on the same panel. Now it is up and running.

And, of course, a lot of fixed bugs. The full list of changes can be viewed here, and upload the new version to official download page

Thank you all for your help in preparing this version, the Vivaldi browser is getting better every day, which can only delight all of us.
