Topton Mini PC based on AMD Ryzen 5000U series

When it came time to change my old laptop for something more modern, after making several approaches, I settled on this Chinese mini PC. One of the main criteria, besides the price, was the presence of a video card that could do little more than display a picture on the monitor, so I dismissed the options based on Intel processors after studying several comparison reviews with AMD Ryzen processors.

Planning to save money, I chose the barebone option – no RAM, hard drive / SSD, WiFi. I had my own NVMe SSD, the memory I wanted to buy at a discount in one of the Russian online stores, I also had my own 2.5 “SSD drive, I ordered a WiFi module with 802.11ax support on the Chinese site.

In the end, I chose Topton Mini PC (no model number provided, it remains to be guided by the photo and characteristics) based on the processor AMD Ryzen 3 5400U. I partially took the photos from the manufacturer’s page, because. I can’t take a better picture.

As for the Topton manufacturer itself, I have a double impression: they seem to be the manufacturer (or just the customer?) with a wide range of mini PCs with interesting characteristics, but all their sites are focused on sales and no support (drivers, instructions, BIOS) is provided , it remains only to write letters or chat to them.

Having guessed the purchase for the sales period of 11.11, I placed an order for the selected mini PC on a well-known Chinese site, applying all sorts of coupons and a seller’s discount. The amount turned out to be just over 25,000 rubles, which is very good compared to what you can buy from us for this money. Delivery by courier to the Russian Federation – just over a month. What is nice – I did not have to pay a fee, because. the seller indicated that this is a PC case with a cost of $100.

The mini PC is packed in a large sky-colored cardboard box, it comes with a power supply, HDMI cable, SATA cable with power, quick instructions, a set of screws for mounting a disk, a bracket for mounting to a monitor at the back (VESA 75×75, 100×100). Despite the fact that I did not order a WiFi module, antenna wires were displayed on the cover of the mini PC.

As you can see in the photo, the top cover is glossy plastic (glued to a metal base) with a protective film. They are fixed to the body with two screws on one side, on the other hand, the protrusions on the roof are inserted into the grooves inside the body.

I will immediately describe the nuances that I had to face (BIOS AMI S013_V1.0_P3C3M43):

  • there is no BIOS reset button – only by disconnecting the battery (it is glued to the case from the inside and is connected to the connector on the board with a rather short cable);

  • no XMP support in BIOS;

  • The BIOS leaves a feeling of stuck “on the knees”: a huge number of various parameters, a significant part of which does not apply to this mini PC at all (for example, support for the built-in webcam, IDE connectors); there is no certainty that the remaining parameters work correctly when changed; in fields where product names, model, etc. are usually indicated. the lines “Default string” are left;

  • the BIOS has the ability to manually set the memory timings (about 40 parameters), but it seems that this does not work (more than one hour was spent on this) – the system does not boot even if you specify known working timings with which the system starts automatically;

  • in idle mode or office work, the cooling system works quietly, but as soon as the load increases, the fan immediately starts to “take off”.

From pleasant:

  • despite the ordered configuration without a WiFi module, the antenna wires were routed on the inside of the housing cover;

  • after installing Windows 11 (from the official image), the system itself was activated “using a digital license”: perhaps some key is embedded in the BIOS, but I did not find it;

  • the metal case looks quite decent, there are ventilation holes on the sides and bottom;

  • in general, the board and assembly are done neatly.

There is a setting in the BIOS settings that enables the RAID mode for M.2 PCIe slots, but it was not possible to check the operation.

The mini PC, as I wrote above, was equipped with an Intel 760p 512 GB SSD NVMe, a 2.5″ Toshiba 1000 GB HDD, Crucial BallistiX BL8G32C16S4B DDR4-3200 2×8 GB RAM, an Intel AX210NGW WiFi module. In this configuration, everything works without problems.

The memory works, as stated by the manufacturer, at a frequency of 2666 MHz (with the lowest timings, which are provided for in SPD 19-19-19-43 2T for my modules) and changing the settings in the BIOS failed to achieve “overclocking”. A rather strange decision on the part of the manufacturer, because for AMD Ryzen 5000U processors of the series, the memory frequency of 3200 MHz is “native” to the wave. I sent a chat request about a possible BIOS update to support XMP, but so far no response. The mini PC manufacturer recommends installing Samsung memory modules (and most likely installs them if you order the memory in the kit), but in the assortment of our stores, when I was looking for memory, there were no brackets I needed.

Because installed Intel SSD NVMe 760p 512 GB supports PCIe 3.1 x4 and the manufacturer claims read speeds up to 3230 MB / s and write speeds up to 1625 MB / s, then I checked what values ​​are actually obtained when installed in this mini PC:

The test results are close to theoretical, so the Cathay did not deceive.

Regarding the presence of an Ethernet 2.5 Gb / s port (implemented on Realtek RTL8125), you can discuss its need for a long time, but for now I decided for myself that this is unnecessary for home use. The Ethernet 1 Gb / s port is implemented on the Realtek RTL8111 PCIe.

Regarding the USB Type-C port, I will illustrate its functionality with a picture of the manufacturer:

So, it claims support for 4K video output, fast smartphone charging (15 W), as well as Power Delivery 3.0. Those. With the appropriate cable and power supply, you can power this mini PC through this port. I don’t have any, so I couldn’t check. But the smartphone charges without problems.

Installation sideways (vertically), as is practiced by some well-known mini PC brands, is not provided here, as there is no corresponding stand in the kit.

It was possible to run tests in AIDA64 6.50.5800 on this mini PC and on a similar positioning Intel NUC10i5FNB (i5-10210U 4 cores 8 threads 1.6-4.1 GHz, Dual DDR4-2133):

Yes, slower memory modules were installed in the NUC, but I still left these results in the table. At a cost of under 38,000 rubles, which is 13,000 rubles. more expensive than Topton, I don’t see any advantages (well, except for the dimensions – the NUC is even more compact) with the Intel NUC.

The overall impression of the mini PC, especially considering the price for which we managed to get it, is very good. I hope the quality is also good with the Chinese and it will serve me for more than one year, and if you still manage to persuade them to update the BIOS to support XMP memory profiles, this will be an ideal mini PC.
