The year-long story of indie team 2V Studio's suffering

We all dreamed of making our own game as children, and some even tried to do something in various construction sets. We spent hours dreaming about how we would make our dream game, how we would become rich, how all the players in the world would hear about us. But as we grew older, this idea faded away or was thrown into the trash with other unrealized plans. Our team is one of that tiny number of people who decided to make their dream come true.

print('Hello World!') To all readers of this article, I am Vlad, a programmer at 2V Studio, today I would like to share with you our year-long journey to becoming developers.

How did I come up with the idea of making games?

I would like to start the story from the moment when I first thought about creating games. Since childhood, I have been thinking about creating my own large-scale AAA game, but back then I didn’t understand anything. I thought I would create my own clone of GTA 5, but with a strong focus on realism, roughly speaking, Real Life for PC, with large-scale servers and a bunch of mechanics. You understand what children under 11 years old wouldn’t think of. Now I understand that such a project would have to be developed for years, or even more than 10 years, not to mention a small team.

Already at the age of 13-14 I tried to find a way to create games on the phone (the computer at that time was not working, and still does not work), spoiler – I did not succeed. Of all the applications at that time, there were all sorts of clones of Roblox Studio and Pocket Code, which I really liked at the time, but with my skills and lazy ass soul I could not do anything and abandoned this idea.

Let's move a little further, namely to 2020-2021, then I got a gaming laptop and already then I thought about programming. At that time, I liked Pascal. Then we just started studying it in computer science lessons, after that I fell in love with programming. What attracted me to programming was that the way you write the code is how it will work. But I didn't sit on Pascal for long, I quickly got bored with the language, well, and I heard on YouTube that the language is unpromising and there is nothing to catch in it. After that, there was an attempt to learn Python, I lasted longer in it, as much as 2-3 weeks. I liked the language itself more than Pascal.

As I said somewhere above, I was a lazy person, and I couldn't study for long, so I gave up programming until I was about 16, or to be more precise, until the moment after defending my final project in the 9th grade. I got so brazen then, I took the topic of programming, knowing only that they pay a lot for it.

How did you come up with the idea to create a studio?

During the defense, I was hooked by my classmate Vova's project, the topic of his project was 3D modeling. Interestingly, he made it literally a couple of hours before the project itself was due. At that moment, I realized – “I need him. I need to take him as a slave.” Two days later, during a physical education lesson, I decided to approach him and offer this idea, to which he responded positively, it turned out that he himself had dreamed of making games since childhood. He turned out to be a complete copy of me, only he was attracted not by programming, but by creating 3D models. Before that, we had not even really communicated, but after this conversation we became inseparable and have already decided to create our own studio.

After much deliberation, we decided to call ourselves 2V Studio. 2V – because both of our names start with B, at that moment this idea seemed top-notch to us, and we still think so.

First ideas and disappointments

Six months later, in the summer, we began developing our first game. Traditionally for the genre, it was a large game. Island of Survivors was conceived as a third-person island survival game with elements of settlement construction and management, a la Cities Skylines, but with elements of survival.

The game itself

The game itself

Over the course of the summer we managed to do little, but we came up with so many ideas that we got confused in our own ideas.

As for me, the project had a future, there were practically no such games on phones, and there still aren't any. But, unfortunately, according to the laws of the genre, the project had to be abandoned.

Literally at the beginning of October, we both burned out and abandoned this project. Now we understand that such a project was simply too large-scale for us. After such an experience, as is already clear, we abandoned the development, I returned to training, and Vladimir to his business.

Return and first earnings

In May of this year, we had the opportunity to register YAN, a close friend of Vova's helped us with this. Then we realized that this was our chance to return to development, just over the past year we gained skills on small projects: I create my small games to raise my spirits and just to gain experience, and Vova works on all sorts of 3D jokes and in passing Technical Assignments for other teams.

But we wouldn't be us if everything went as usual for us. through the ass not according to plan.

  • At first there was a problem with the lack of a boring address in the registration form.

  • Afterwards we forgot to upgrade the status of the YuMoney wallet.

  • In the end, Vova's friend simply could not provide us with the remaining documents because of his work.

But in the end, by the end of May, we were able to complete the YAN account and began releasing the first game.

But in the end, by the end of May, we were able to finish the YAN account and started releasing the first game. At that time, Fallout was popular, as you know. So we decided to start our career by creating quizzes on different parts of this series, and the series itself. We quickly made the basis of the game in one evening and in a couple of days we had hacked together questions for it.

The second game was traditionally a clone Flappy Birdthere's practically nothing to say about it, a regular Flappy Bird, but instead of a bird – a meme. We also added pumping and buying skins.

These were our income statistics by the end of June – beginning of July.

In our opinion, this is a good result, given that we are not very familiar with this platform yet, and we had no experience in developing games before.

Thank you for reading this article, we would be very grateful if you also look at our videomade according to this article, but in a shorter form.
