According to RBC, in the first quarter of 2020, the St. Petersburg Exchange will open for Russian investors the opportunity to trade securities of the London and Hong Kong stock exchanges. Previously, only stocks of American companies could be bought from Russia.

Note: investments on the exchange are associated with risk, it should be remembered. In addition, to perform operations with shares of companies on the Moscow Exchange, you will need a brokerage account. It can be opened online. You can also practice operations and study trading software using a test account with virtual money.

Why do Russian investors need foreign stocks

Recently in Russia there has been a surge in interest in stock exchange investments. The number of private investors on the Moscow Exchange exceeded 3.5 million people. Since the beginning of the year, 1.6 million investors have opened brokerage accounts for trading on the exchange.

You can buy shares of foreign companies directly from Russia without the need to open an account with a foreign broker on the St. Petersburg Exchange. Shares of well-known companies also attract the attention of investors.

One of the main reasons for the powerful influx on the stock exchange is that people are looking for ways to preserve and increase finances, and bank deposit rates are low.

As a result, only in the last year more money has come to the Russian stock market than in general for the previous five years.

What foreign stocks are of interest to Russian investors

According to RBC, the most popular shares of foreign companies among Russian investors are securities of Apple, Alibaba, Amazon and Tesla. In total, more than 1,200 shares of American companies are now listed on the St. Petersburg Exchange. Transactions with them are concluded monthly by 70 thousand investors.

The start of stock trading from the London and Hong Kong exchanges will help expand this list further and enable investors to build more complex strategies. In addition, the London Stock Exchange trades many popular global companies, including those from the IT sector.
