Reading on the weekend: three books on corporate networking

This is a compact digest of literature on configuring network infrastructure and security policies. We have selected books that are often mentioned on Hacker News and other thematic sites about managing network resources, configuring and securing cloud infrastructure.

Computer Networks: A Systems Approach

The book is devoted to the key principles of building computer networks. Co-authored by Bruce Davie, VMware’s Lead Network Security Engineer. Using examples from practice, he examines how to control the congestion of communication channels and allocate system resources at scale. Free simulation software is included with the book.

The list of topics discussed by the authors also includes: P2P, wireless connections, routing, operation of switches and end-to-end protocols. One of the residents of Hacker News notedthat Computer Networks: A Systems Approach is an excellent guide to networking.

Interestingly, since last year the book has become free – now it is licensed CC BY 4.0… In addition, everyone can take part in its editing – corrections and additions are accepted in the official repositories on GitHub


UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook

This book is a bestseller in the UNIX Administration category. She is often mentioned on resources like Hacker News and fresh thematic collections of literature for sysadmins.

This material is a comprehensive reference on how to maintain and maintain the health of your UNIX and Linux systems. The authors provide practical advice and examples. They cover memory management, DNS tuning and operating system security, as well as performance analysis and other topics.

The fifth edition of the UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook has been updated with information on configuring corporate networks in the cloud. One of the founding fathers of the Internet, Paul Vixie (Paul vixie) even called it an indispensable reference for engineers in companies whose infrastructure is in the cloud and built on open source software.

Silence on the Wire: A Field Guide to Passive Reconnaissance and Indirect Attacks

The latest edition of the book by Michal Zalewski, cyber security expert and white hacker. In 2008, he was included in the top 15 most influential people in the field of cybersecurity according to eWeek magazine… Michal is also considered one of the developers of the virtual OS Argante
