At the forefront is the relatively productive eight-core Rockchip RK3588S chip. It includes four high-performance Cortex-A76 cores operating at up to 2.4GHz, plus four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores operating at 1.8GHz.

The graphics are integrated here (it was hard to expect otherwise), this is the Mali-G610 MP4. It is also used in other single-board systems released in 2022. Its popularity is due to good opportunities. So, Mali-G610 MP4 is able to handle video in 8K quality and 60 frames per second. We use H.265/AVS2/VP9/H.264/AV1 codecs.

By the way, the same graphics are installed in another analogue of the “raspberry”, which we have already described – Orange Pi 5.

Well, as a bonus, there is also a neuroprocessor unit with a performance of 6 Tops. If you take into account the installed graphics, then the single-board can be used in image processing systems, including a video stream – say, from a surveillance camera.

new single-board, after which they announced that the new product is superior to RPI 4 in many tasks. For example, the Chinese system is three times faster than the “raspberry” in tests with the 7-zip archiver, and four times faster when working with a browser under Linux.

The advantage of a single-board is the presence of built-in eMMC-memory. The buyer can choose the volume from 32 to 128 GB. The amount of RAM can also be selected – from 4 GB to 16 GB. True, there is also an option without eMMC memory, this is made for a buyer who does not need internal memory, but the low cost of the device is important. If necessary, you can use the SD card as a storage device.

Well, another bonus is support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 wireless communication.

The software that the Chinese board works with is diverse. It’s Debian 11 and Ubuntu 22.04, plus Android 12. Not bad.

What about price and availability?


Everything is good here. True, the Chinese board is more expensive than the “raspberry”. But it is understandable – you will have to pay extra for more features than the Raspberry Pi. The cost of the device is $142 for the junior version. There is no shortage of these boards, as well as the Orange Pi 5 mentioned above.

Getting new versions of the “raspberry” in the Russian Federation is not that hard, but not easy. The problem is that manufacturers themselves admit that demand is higher than supply at the moment. They promise to solve this problem in 2023, but it is not clear whether it will actually be solved. Well, plus logistical problems with delivery – this also affects the availability of the board.

By the way, Raspberry manufacturers have increased the cost of the Quartet – the version with 2 GB of RAM now costs $45. This is a lot, although, of course, cheaper than the Chinese.

What other alternatives are there?


Apart from the Cool Pi 4, there are other options as well. One of them is a single-board UP 4000 on an x86 processor.

The cost of the device is about $116 for the base model. It went on sale in August 2022.

The size of a single-payer, like the previous model, is slightly larger than the size of a credit card. This is, in fact, a full-fledged PC that can work as a simple office solution. Well, or serve as a base for a cool project.

The maximum configuration of the device is 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. Processors can also be different:

  • Intel Celeron N3350 with Intel HD 500 graphics
  • Intel Pentium N4200 with Intel HD 505 graphics
  • Intel Atom x7-E3950 with Intel HD 505 graphics

Well, another option is Orange Pi 5, which was mentioned above. It is also eight-core, based on the Rockchip RK3588S processor. This is a dual-cluster CPU – in the first cluster there are four high-performance Cortex-A76 cores at a frequency of up to 2.4 GHz, in the second – energy-efficient Cortex-A55 (1.8 GHz). As for graphics, the 4-core Mali-G610 MP4 module is responsible for it.

Summing up, it is worth saying that the new single-board PC is able to replace desktops or nettops of the basic configuration. It will not cope with too resource-intensive tasks, but it can solve most of the tasks of a basic or intermediate level.
