new chips worth looking out for

Telecommunications companies are constantly in need of new equipment and individual high-performance elements. For example, processors. And over the past few months, several chip manufacturers have introduced new models that surprise with performance and the features the industry needs.

This article is a selection of processors that have been released by different companies over the past few months. We also talk about the chips that should appear in the near future, so as not to miss out on new items. Well, the most interesting, traditionally, under the cut.

Yitian 710 128-core Armv9 processor

Now processors are starting to be released by new market players, and their products are not inferior to recognized authorities in this industry. Of course, Alibaba isn’t exactly a newbie, but it still doesn’t release new items for the server industry very often.

One of these days the company presented its 128-core Armv9 Yitian 710 processor. So there are even more ARM server processors – Alibaba Cloud has joined Ampere, AWS, Fujitsu, HiSilicon, Phytium and a number of other ARM chip makers.

Now ARM-architecture is confidently mastering the market of server chips. The latter are gradually acquiring their own hardware ecosystem, including boards, modules, servers, and so on.

The processor from Alibaba has its own processor socket and its own harness. Not surprising, considering that the number of cores in the chip reaches 128. The processors are made using 5nm technology. Inside – 60 billion transistors, operating frequency – 3.2 GHz. In addition, it is worth mentioning an eight-channel DDR5 controller and 96 PCIe 5.0 lanes.

The chips are already available for purchase, but they certainly cost a lot.

AMD Epyc Genoa

AMD is not inferior to other players in the server processor market. More recently, she

announced

its new AMD Epyc Genoa processor, which will receive up to 96 cores. It is reported that older models will receive up to 13 crystals, which include 12 CCD chiplets and one I / O chip.

These are 5nm processors that will receive 12-channel DDR5 memory controller with support for DDR5-5200 modes, PCI Express 5.0 bus controller with 128 lines in a single-socket version and 160 lines in a two-socket version.

Unfortunately, unlike the previous processor, AMD Epyc Genoa will not be available until 2022 at the earliest.

ARTPEC-8 with AI video analytics support

Here we are talking about

dedicated chip

, which is designed to work with network video applications. The chip makes it possible to improve the image quality, effectively compress data, increase the security of the processed data and reduce the overall load on telecommunication channels from the data storage system.

With regard to data protection, the manufacturer claims that all stages of chip production are under its direct control. Accordingly, there are no hardware spies here.

Other features of the chip include support for Secure Boot, digitally signed firmware and Edge Vault for keys and certificates.

Chips for data centers is a very interesting topic, but we have other articles, check it out – we talk about:

IBM Telum processors

IBM unveiled new chips for corporations in late summer 2021. Tellum is a new generation of z-processors that are designed to handle business-critical tasks.

Significant attention is also paid here to security – during calculations, data is not sent outside the system. The in-chip interference accelerator is integrated with the cache subsystem using the z / Architecture processor and memory protection mechanisms.

The chip, according to the manufacturer, will make it possible to prevent the vast majority of fraudulent transactions, including fraud. The new chip is “sharpened” for use by banking and financial institutions and is able to work with operations such as loan processing, clearing and settlement of transactions, anti-money laundering and risk analysis.

The chip is produced at 7 nm, inside – 22 billion transistors. The number of cores is not as large as in the chips described above, but this is not required. In total, there are 8 cores with a frequency of over 5 GHz. The L2 cache is 32 MB. The developers have provided for a 256 MB L3 cache, plus a 2 GB L4 cache.

Now the processors are not yet available – they will go on sale no earlier than next year.

A prototype of a Russian network processor for a data center

We are talking about the development of the MALT System company, which is close to the completion of the Malstrem-1T project. It is known about him that this is the first domestic network chip, which is designed for data centers, namely, traffic processing.

The basis of the prototype is FPGA Xilinx Kintex-7. The processor complies with the OpenFlow 1.3 standard.

The main task of the prototype is to prove the possibility of creating chips using 28/16/12 nm technical processes. These are specialized network processors with terabit-level performance.

Unfortunately, there are many unknown factors in this project – it is unclear when the chip will be released, whether it will go on sale at all and how much it might cost.

RISC-V processors from Ventana Micro Systems

This is another project to be implemented within the next year. The Ventana Micro Systems startup was founded in 2018, its leaders are ex-employees of Arm, AMD, Intel, Samsung, Xilinx and other companies that are engaged in the development and production of electronics.

The organization is developing high-performance processors based on RISC-V architecture for data centers. It looks like everything is going according to plan, as the company promises to provide test samples of the processors as early as next year. Well, sales of chips will start in 2023.

The company announced that the processor cores will be produced independently, but the chiplets will be created in accordance with the needs of customers. The cores will be produced using 5nm technology. Chips are intended for large telecommunications companies that need high-performance chips for the data center.
