natural, but not harmless

From Monday evening to the current moment, hysteria in the media and in the district Moscow groups does not subside – whoever connects the fog thickening over the capital with the burning of garbage / felling residues, flat-earthers from the atmosphere immediately recalled their mythical “chemtrails”, Roman Mendelevich gave (as usual ) a very competent comment, but frightened the audience with the word “radiation” – an epithet, which, by the way, refers to fog in almost half of the cases.

I could not resist and climbed to look at the weather maps / vertical sections of the atmosphere, and this is what I have to say: the fog, of course, of natural origin, but “complex”.

Let’s point by point:
1. It is definitely not smoke and not the result of burning something – this version is supported by at least the fact that it is observed not only in Moscow and Moscow Region, but also in neighboring regions. Cutting residues for such an effect are still burned until the end of November. This does not mean that “under the guise” no one burned anything anywhere, but this is not the reason for the phenomenon.

2. Basically (and here RM Vilfand is absolutely right) the reason is the sharp evening cooling of the surface layer of air (here are the inversions loved by many) and condensation of droplets in the lower layers – this is precisely what is called the alarming word “radiation fog”.
That is, in fact, the MAIN CAUSE OF THE MOSCOW FOG IS THE SAME AS FOR SUMMER EVENING FOGS IN THE RELIEF DECREASES ABOVE ITD FIELDS. Only in summer does the powerful sun dissipate it by morning, but in November it is already not so warm in our latitudes – therefore, November fogs can stand for several days in a row. If the wind doesn’t blow.

3. Advection (as meteorologists call “inflow”) of warm air from the south added a little to the fog density. That is, the fog is not strictly “radiation”, but with “additives”. An example when the fog in Moscow is completely advective is, for example, if in January it warms up sharply to + 5, and the fog is also very dense over the snowdrifts.

4. This situation (which is natural) was also aggravated by emissions from vehicles (and maybe some other – there are reports of the smell of “fog”, but so far there is no exact information or is not available to me), therefore, at night, the concentration of PM2.5 ( most dangerous to health) according to the sensors of the crowdsourcing networks of activists Moscow. Breathes showed very high values. Moreover, there was no wind to “inflate” these emissions.

In general, the combination of fog with increased levels of air pollution (especially at low air temperatures) is quite unhealthy for city health, which must also be borne in mind.

We continue to observe and follow on.
