My Review of the Just Announced Android 8K VR Headset “Play For Dream MR” – Almost an “Apple Vision Pro Killer”

A year ago I wrote about Apple Vision Pro (and in general, I still agree with myself), and the other day it finally happened Hold AVP in your hands (video review on YouTube).

And just the other day I was able to test an early prototype of the just announced “Apple Vision Pro killer” (nobody calls it that, but the analogies come to mind) from the Chinese Play For Dream (former YVR).

Video of my review in the Play For Dream office and thoughts immediately afterwards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BACDGJ4L6mA

Pros compared to Apple Vision Pro:

  • Higher resolution.

  • Larger viewing angle.

  • Open, customizable Android instead of the walled-off Vision OS.

  • PC VR support out of the box! + 2 controllers out of the box (no base stations needed).

  • Cheaper.

  • More comfortable.

  • It's already a pretty good replacement for monitors (the text and icons on several virtual monitors are quite clear).

It's too early to talk about the downsides (it's still a prototype, not a release version). Therefore, here are some points that they should pay attention to:

  • MR tracking of virtual objects.

  • I didn’t touch hand and gaze tracking, so I can’t say anything.

  • PC VR gaming is declared, but I didn’t touch it, so I can’t say anything.

  • Meta exclusives will not be available, the standalone library as a whole will be significantly smaller than the same Quest 3 (but it can easily be larger than AVP).

  • Overall, there is still a lot of work to be done on the interface.

Good luck to them 🙂 The hardware is very interesting and very competitive (as of mid-2024)

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

P.S. I didn't get any money, I just really love VR 🙂
