MIRAN is testing broadband access using Aqua Ethernet technology

The R&D department of Comfortel has developed an innovative last mile communication technology called Aqua Ethernet, and we have started testing it.

“In this case, we can abandon the expensive solutions of foreign vendors, which are now difficult to implement in the Russian Federation. This is a truly breakthrough technology, which, I hope, we will launch into mass production right now, and this will give a new impetus, I will not be afraid of the word, in achieving the goals of digitalization of the entire country,” said Vitaly Nikolaev, Director of Data Center Infrastructure Miran centers.

“In all cities, connecting new customers is not easy, as it is becoming increasingly difficult for operators to lay fiber optic networks. Often this is due to problems with access to the telephone sewer or its dilapidation. Overhead communication lines are also becoming a thing of the past – the desire of administrations and residents to keep the sky clear is understandable. Therefore, there is a need for a new technology that would allow finding new and maximum budget opportunities for organizing the last mile. We believe that the aquatic environment is an ideal candidate for this role, since every office has running water, every tap opens up unprecedented communication opportunities,” says Dmitry Petrov, CEO of Comfortel.

What is technology

The company drew attention to the aquatic environment because of its unique physical properties. Thus, the refractive index of optics in a fiber is 1.46, and in water it is 1.33, i.e. figures are close. To use water for data transmission, Comfortel has developed a Fiber to the Water (FTTW) converter that converts an optical signal into a resonant frequency signal that is sent through the water.

The converter is connected directly to the water pipe, while the transfer rate will depend on the diameter of the pipe. For example, through a standard 0.5-inch pipe, traffic can be transmitted at a speed of 113.8 Mbps. To increase the speed, you need to use several connections at once and the multi-channel converter of the Water Connection (or WC) system. Its application will provide speeds sufficient, including for industrial data centers.

Among the significant features of the technology is its low cost and import independence from expensive solutions of Western vendors, on which the data transmission network is traditionally built. Aqua Ethernet also solves the problem of lack of equipment in the face of sanctions. We expect that our new product from Comfortel will quickly pass the procedures for obtaining certificates from the Ministry of Digital Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade and will be able to contribute to the accelerated digitalization of the entire country.
