Listen at the weekend: a Russian-language podcast about home cinema halls, the “audiolist wishlist” and the sound shop

We present to your attention only selected issues of one of the few programs on audio technology in Russian. We are discussing how to equip the cinema, what it can be like, what gifts the “audioman” will like, and what you need to know about the work of the sound engineer.

Dolby Atmos and his friends [Хабр] [[Web player][[Apple podcasts]. Together with an expert in home cinema, they discussed how things are going in the industry – why they called Dolby Atmos “a breath of fresh air” and how the principle of creating sound immersion now looks. We also talked about how the audience’s requests changed, gave a couple of tips regarding the arrangement of a home theater: who is suitable for the “out of the box” option, and who better to attend to a more expensive solution. Plus – told where you can evaluate the sound quality before buying.

How to make a sound for a movie [Хабр] [[Web player][[Apple podcasts]. We interviewed Yevgeny Pereyaslavtsev, who studied film production in Los Angeles and worked on various projects as a sound engineer. To begin with, we found out who works in the “sound shop” and how to get into it.

Fragment of the issue: “This was probably one of the most creative approaches that I have seen. They specially assembled the installation from sticks and boards on pieces of chipboard, bought all kinds of parts at flea markets, AliExpress, eBay, assembled a sound installation, a howler who came as close as possible to the sound of the siren of the 70s.

They fastened this structure to the roof of the car and recorded exactly the car sweeping past to get the Doppler effect. Their task was to recreate as many sounds as possible with a minimum of computer processing. “Not just to take a clean, even tone of a siren, but also to record how the car sweeps past, how this tone decreases and rises.”

In the second part, they told how they write sound, what is “a theater in a bank” and who nevertheless speaks in a movie – an actor or a sound understudy. They completed the issue with a discussion of why it is better to watch films in the original, remembered the pictures that were successful and not very good from the point of view of sound editing.

More about home theaters [Хабр] [[Web player][[Apple podcasts]. We decided to discuss what changes have occurred in the field of cinema halls. We touched on Dolby Atmos and Auro-3D, figured out which technologies went to the masses, and which ones did not achieve popularity. We also tried to suggest how sound immersion will develop and touched on 3D themes for the home.

They also talked about how to upgrade equipment to meet new technologies, what is worth upgrading from audio equipment, and what can be left for a long period. A large block was dedicated to the choice of a projector and its role in the home theater ecosystem.
