internet search powered by ChatGPT4

We’re testing SearchGPT, a prototype of new search features that combine the power of our AI models with information from the web to provide fast, timely answers with clear, relevant sources. We’re rolling this out to a small group of users and publishers to get feedback. While this prototype is temporary, we plan to integrate the best of these features directly into ChatGPT in the future. If you’d like to try the prototype, sign up for the waiting list.

A new way to search

Getting answers online can be a labor-intensive process, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results. We believe that by improving the conversational capabilities of our models using real-time information from the web, finding what you need can become faster and easier.

Designed to give you the answer

SearchGPT will answer your questions quickly and directly using up-to-date information from the internet, providing clear links to relevant sources.

You will be able to ask clarifying questions, just like in a conversation with a person, while the context will be preserved and developed with each request.

Collaboration with publishers and content creators

We are committed to supporting a thriving ecosystem of publishers and content creators. We hope to help users discover publishers’ sites and content by providing more options for discovery. For decades, search has been the primary way for publishers and content creators to reach users. Now, we are using AI to improve this experience, highlighting high-quality content in a conversational interface with plenty of opportunities for user engagement.

“AI-powered search will be one of the key ways people navigate the web, and it’s critical that this technology is built from the ground up in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers. We look forward to collaborating with OpenAI on this journey and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic.” — Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic

SearchGPT is designed to help users engage with publishers by explicitly citing and referencing them in search queries. Responses include clear, inline attribution and links so users know where the information is coming from and can quickly navigate to additional results via a sidebar of source links.

We’re working with publishers to build this experience and continue to listen to their feedback. In addition to launching the SearchGPT prototype, we’re also launching a way for publishers to control how they appear in SearchGPT, giving publishers more choice. It’s important to note that SearchGPT is for search and is not tied to training OpenAI’s core generative AI models. Sites may appear in search results even if they’ve opted out of generative AI training. To learn more about publisher control and OpenAI bots, read here (link opens in a new window).

We’ve also heard from publishers and content creators that they want to understand how best to interact with search AI products and how their content performs. We’ll use this prototype to learn and share our findings. If you’d like to share your feedback, please email us at publishers-feedback@openai.com.

“Sam and the truly talented team at OpenAI understand that for AI search to be effective, it must be powered by high-quality, reliable information from trusted sources. For the universe to be in balance, the relationship between technology and content must be symbiotic, and the provenance of information must be protected.” – Robert Thomson, Chief Executive Officer, News Corp

What's next

We will continue to improve the experience in areas such as local information and commerce. We also plan to get feedback on the prototype from users and publishers and integrate the best elements of this experience into ChatGPT. If you want to try SearchGPT, sign up for the waiting list.
