how to relax without remorse

How is your weekend? Do you meet spring on the street, clean melting snow near the house or garage, walk with children, pull iron in the hall, sit down in your favorite game or work outside of work because you are used to working? Each of us is free to spend our free time as we see fit. But it is not a fact that what is needed will turn out to be correct and useful, allowing you to reboot the body, give it rest – physical, intellectual, emotional. However, it cannot be said that some pattern of recreation is uniquely universal and correct for everyone: the types of recreation and their effectiveness depend on age, physique, occupation, habits, personality type, region of residence and a host of other factors. That does not negate the general recommendations that you should pay attention to in order to be in harmony with your body.

  • Rest is not a privilege of a weekend or holidays, it must be both full-fledged (long-term) and periodically short-lived (including during working hours). Not a single person is able to work 8 hours a day without harm to somatic health and psyche, an adequate continuous maximum is 3-4 hours. Therefore, it is important to plan holidays in the same way as you plan your work: intervals, methods, leisure activities, holiday partners or loneliness, etc.

  • Work, even the most beloved, is not rest. With the spread of remote work in 2020, more and more employees of companies are actually working constantly: someone out of inertia, someone from workaholism, someone “from nothing to do”, and most because of the irrational mixing of household chores and work (as a result both aspects are affected). Sometimes it seems that the work you love is like a good vacation: you just continue to do what you like. This is an unpleasant trap that will lead to burnout: the lack of switching activities and the monotonous activity will sooner or later tire everyone. It is imperative to take a break from work – so you can return to it with fresh ideas, strength, and even with a new look at tasks and processes.

  • Rest should be the antagonist of work. This is not a strict rule, on the contrary, someone likes to relax and work in the same rhythm and with the same load, but from the point of view of physiology, it is more rational to combine different loads and paces. If you have a sedentary job, it is better to walk in the park, play sports or dance, work in the country; on the contrary, if the legs feed the wolf (for example, you are an employee of the field engineering service) and these very legs are buzzing, it is better to stretch out and listen, watch or read something pleasant and interesting. Thus, you will do the most important thing – give a good rest or a full load to your body, the state of which determines your mood, emotions, and ability to work.

  • Don’t forget about nature. Often we walk around the city without noticing the world around us: birds have flown in, streams in the park have formed lakes in which birches are beautifully reflected, snow creaks pleasantly or pebbles roll under our feet, the sea rustles or a river carries ice. observing nature helps to focus on your thoughts, relax and get pleasant emotions (the green color “works” especially well). If you can’t switch off from the world of contemplation, choose active contact with nature: hiking, rafting, walking with a camera, or even special hobbies like birdwatching (bird watching).

  • Rest should take place in several directions:

    • physical – first of all, the body should rest, successfully combining for itself the load and the state of rest; it is important that there is time not only for ordinary rest, but also for rest in case of injuries, illnesses, falls, etc. – you should not sit at work with a high temperature or a slight concussion, this will reduce productivity and cause irreparable harm in the literal sense;

    • emotional – let go of fears and worries for the rest, do not think about people who strain or annoy you, allow yourself the luxury of loneliness (by the way, immersion in good fiction is great for emotional relaxation);

    • intellectual – you need to find the strength in yourself to “slow down” and stop thinking about work, tasks, a pet project, stop doing thought-scrolling; if you succeed, you will get the most pleasant side effect – insights can begin on those tasks, questions and situations that seemed already hopeless or immensely difficult.

  • Find out what energizes, inspires and relaxes you. At the intersection lies the perfect rest. Just do not forget about an important condition: your vacation should not infringe on the time and rest of other people (alas, or even fortunately, even relatives and friends should rest, including from each other).

  • Assemble a set of relaxation routines – they will send an unambiguous signal to the brain “it’s time to rest.” For example, start your vacation with your favorite music, dancing, cleaning, walking along a certain route, visiting your usual cafe, etc. So you will form small rituals that allow you to quickly rebuild from the mode of work to the mode of rest, rest or change of activity (again, what suits whoever).

  • Don’t blame yourself for the rest: This is not a waste of time, but the right investment in yourself. If you feel guilty, you will not be able to have a good rest, moreover, you will get even more tired, because you will start to catch up with everything that you think you have missed “in festivity and idleness”.

  • Don’t be afraid to rest. A special story for difficult situations: when a person finds himself in a difficult life period and is overloaded to the limit, he is afraid to take a break, because he knows that a return to hell will follow the rest (for example, a combination of work with illness of loved ones or troubles in his personal life). It seems that it is worth running through the whole marathon of troubles, and only then will you definitely break away to the fullest. Yes, it’s true that after a period of rest (and sometimes just sleep) in a difficult period of life, returning to an unpleasant routine is literally unbearable. But in critical situations, especially if they drag on for a long time, it is necessary to rest, otherwise you will begin to collapse as a person and degrade, devoting yourself to work, fighting troubles and experiences. Despite the fact that the exit from the rest at such moments is more than disgusting, the rest itself gives a boost of strength and, most importantly, spares the overloaded body. If you allow yourself to choose the time of rest, you can really reach the end of the “black streak”, if not, another one will come after it, associated with torn health.

  • Resting is okay. Alas, we, the children of the 70-80-90s, were not taught to rest. How many times in our life have we heard: “a change of occupation is the best rest”, “is this where you get so tired, at the computer or what?” and invariably invigorating “let’s rest in the next world”! Rest for many people is still associated with laziness, slovenliness, loss of time. Meanwhile, the body will still take its toll: if you don’t want it voluntarily, I will drive you to the parking lot with illness, overwork, depression, burnout – you will rest not with pleasure, but with fever, apathy and doctors. Healthy, good, effective rest is the choice of an adequate adult who was able to love and understand himself. This is a sign of respect for oneself and one’s health, a guarantee of a normal working condition and mental balance. At the same time, recreation is available to absolutely everyone. The main thing is to want to get it, and here the only obstacle is ourselves.
