Before we begin: what is a skin?

Among game developers and 3D modelers, the term “skin” is used to refer to the “skin” of characters and objects. Simply put, it's their outer shell. Imagine that we took a simple 3D model without a skin: in this case, it would look like a smooth figure, reminiscent of a plastic doll from childhood. Nothing interesting, right? Especially when it comes to game development and modeling.

It is the “skin” that is the tool for giving virtual characters and objects an attractive appearance. And we should also note that the skin is, first of all, a set of images in the form of a scan. It is superimposed on a three-dimensional model and can include various details:

How to Make a Cat Skin in Roblox: Step-by-Step Instructions

Note that skins can be found on the internal marketplace of the Roblox online platform. The store looks like the one shown in the screenshot below.

We see that some skins are free: these are the ones shown in the screenshot. Others require purchase: payment can be made with Robux, the internal currency of the Roblox online platform. But we are interested in creating a skin from scratch, so let's figure out how to make a “skin” for a colorful cat yourself.

1. Step one: download the scan images and load them into the graphics editor you are using

The images we are interested in can be downloaded directly from the article. They are presented below. Be sure to use them.

Now you will need:

1. Download and install a new one or run the graphic editor already installed on your PC. For our lesson, we will need Photoshop. If you do not have this program on your computer, download and install it first.

2. Upload the image to the editor.

3. Proceed to the next step.

2. Step two: create a T-shirt for the future character – a bright cat

Let's continue the tutorial on the skin in “Roblox” and create a conditional T-shirt – the basis of the “skin”. The steps are simple: follow the instructions to make it work. Here are the steps you need to take:

1. Open the downloaded image in Photoshop. It should look like the screenshot below.

2. Create a duplicate using the “Layers” drop-down menu: in it, click on the button labeled “Create a duplicate layer…”.

3. Turn off the visibility of the main layer. This can be done by clicking on the icon with the image of an eye. A visual example is shown in the screenshot.

4. Select the Rectangular Region tool and select the stencils – separately located colored areas. To capture several areas at once, hold down the Shift key while selecting the figures with the mouse: this will help.

5. Delete the selected areas from the duplicated layer. To do this, simply press the Delete key on the keyboard or click on the “Clear” line in the “Edit” drop-down menu.

So, we should see empty space. We will need it to draw the skin on the second layer. And also, first, we need to activate the visibility of the main scan.

Let's start creating an improvised T-shirt. To do this, we need to select the “Brush” tool and start working with it. To create light and dark areas, let's try changing the hardness. This will help us smooth out the transitions and make the skin more realistic. But it's far from ideal, so let's add details.

3. Step three: create fur and paws

So, the conditional T-shirt is ready. And to finish the model skin for the cat simulator in Roblox, let's do the following steps:

1. Let's draw the fur. Select the Line tool and note that we need pixels, not a shape or outline.

2. Let's apply stripes to the almost finished skin. It's easy to do: using the “Lines” tool, draw horizontal stripes of orange color at the same distance from each other.

3. Let's make the paws. To do this, put two large pink circles in the lower central part in the Right and Left Arm windows, and three small ones a little higher.

So, we should get a scan similar to what is shown in the screenshot.

4. Step four: save the file in PNG format

To “extract” a skin from the program, you need to left-click on the “File” drop-down menu and select the line “Save as…”

Now let's come up with a name and choose where to upload the PNG. Let's name it “Funny Cat Skin for Roblox” and the destination directory is the desktop. Don't forget to set the required format. It's PNG.

At the end we will need to click on the “Save” button.

It is enough to repeat the settings shown on the screenshot.

5. Step Five: Go to the Roblox Create page and upload the template

The cat skin is ready, all that's left is to upload it to Roblox. The sequence of necessary steps:

1. We go to the Roblox Create system.

2. Go to the page for uploading new elements. You need to click on Upload Asset and select the skin file saved on your desktop. Additionally, specify the Shirt type, name and short description in the Description window.

Now you need to wait a little: first the icon will appear, and the downloaded file itself will be processed.
