How to get 30 remote jobs? Experience of 300 interviews. 9 non-obvious tips for the job seeker

This method gave me a conversion rate of 50% from an interview to an offer for a marketing position with an income of 70k.

This confidence helped me survive the first 3 months of unsuccessful attempts: I went to social services, did exhausting tests and even got a job, which I ran away from after 2 weeks.

Fucked up, but found a METHOD

I was looking for remote employment, I took on everything – the benefit of agency experience allowed me to recall examples from different niches.

I was only interested in remote control, and at first I checked the hh.ru “distant work”. I received a list of vacancies, which I quickly combed through, began to look for how to expand the sample. Often HRs and employers do not notice the “remote work” checkbox in the xx interface when they write a vacancy. Therefore, they write the words “remote work” right inside the text. To find such vacancies, you need an advanced search. If you drive in “marketer remotely” in it, xx does not check the search box for “remote work”, but looks for exactly what you entered in the search. There are more and more vacancies.

But I found some of the good remote vacancies through such an advanced search.


The selection of vacancies is the most time-consuming stage. I wool the Headhunter daily. I definitely had problems at this stage, because there were more than ⅔ of failures. There were niches that I responded to on the ball: infobusiness, real estate, repair. Most of the time there was an auto-rejection.

If it came to calling an HR, I was asked if I had experience in this area. I swam, so the conversation did not go further. The first step I abandoned these niches.

The field of activity of the company may be indicated incorrectly – often the business owner has several different businesses. And sometimes they even hire an HR agency, then the company profile will say that this is an agency.


The position of a marketer can be called in different ways. I even know an anecdotal case of how a company could not find a marketer for 3 months because they called the vacancy “marketing manager” and did not receive any views. Usually, to search for vacancies for myself, I use the keys:

How can I improve my resume?

When I monitored XX, I realized that there are not so many niches in general. Here is what is basically there:

In some I have had solid experience. So I created copy of the resume with the headings “marketer in ”. Thus, I achieved a match between the request of the employer and what I want to offer.

I immediately understood that I wouldn’t get off with one headline, so in each resume I painted in numbers the experience with the niche from the headline. Everything else was kept short.

I always wrote accompanying. Often, the HR gives a “question for attentiveness” in the text of the vacancy, so there may be a one-word answer.

When you call, you will have to explain who you are and why you are calling. Of course, at first I did this, but I have long since moved away from this. If you wait a couple of days, the HR often calls back. In this case, the dialogue will develop warmer, because he needs more. If you have experience, you can afford to appreciate him and yourself at the same time.

It’s great for a marketer candidate when it’s not the HR that gets in touch, but the owner or ROP immediately. This reduces the social security, you immediately move on to pressing issues. It also means that there is no marketing manager in this company.

The first months I filled it out, then I quit. From the completed forms I did not receive not a single invitation. I concluded that this is a waste of time in a black box – you do not know what they are looking for, so you can not adjust with the answers. Moreover, there is an imitation of interest on the part of the employer: it’s as if you were selected and praised, but in fact they didn’t spend time on it and send this Google form to everyone automatically. At the same time, you are required to spend time – it will take at least 15 minutes to think about the questions and enter the answers.


Conversation with HR

I regard HR as a necessary evil: in fact, I need to talk with someone further, but in order to be allowed to that conversation, I need to go through the HR stage. My task at this stage is simply to pass. If I deviate from the goal, I will flunk the interview and not find out what’s next.

I flunked social security with an HR on the question “Are you ready to work on Vladivostok time, since the employer is in Vladivostok?”. It is clear that he is not ready, but this should not be discussed with the HR. And for an HR, I become just an uncomfortable candidate. I am being screened out, and I do not get the opportunity to negotiate with the decision maker. And he may still be negotiable.

Sometimes an HR can give a test.

It is of three types:

  • psychological,

  • marketing from a famous marketer,

  • marketing pro project

If you do from these three, then only the third.

I periodically did psychological and marketing under the project. They let me go one step further. But at the next stage, I never received an offer. I concluded that here again a black box and people choose according to incomprehensible criteria.

Therefore, I myself now say that I do not do test at this stage.


Self-presentation at the meeting

The turning point in the conversion of benefits to offers happened when I started to anticipate expectations. A normal employer wants to be paid attention to his business and offered a plan.

So I changed the course of the interview: instead of answering questions, I made a presentation. It briefly contained information about me, slides with similar projects, a mind map of traffic channels for the business I was interviewing. There was also an analysis of the site, advertising in direct and google, vk and insta.

It took about an hour to analyze the finished template:

  • 20 minutes to browse the site and write 5-7 joints

  • 10 minutes to choose cases from ready-made slides, at least somehow similar to the project

  • 20 minutes to assemble click.ru analysis of Yandex.Direct by competitors and by the client itself

  • 10 minutes on social networks: find ads in the targethunter, if there was one, in a forbidden social network. networks view advertising library

The workpiece broke with the presentation. Now I could manage the interview. And the employer often had no questions. Most often, he did not even want to give a test – he already knew everything, also in relation to his project. If, nevertheless, they give a test here, it means that something in the presentation was most likely unconvincing. Testing at the last stage, of course, must be done.

The presentation helped avoid cross-examination like “how do you measure roi?”, “how would you scale a good hypothesis?” and “how to hire and supervise a SEO specialist?”.

  • I learned how to convert 50% at a social meeting with a manager through presentations. And then without presentations – I already had a plan in my head about what to talk about.

  • Demand is undulating: in December they are looking for urgently and dump the hangers for the year, in January and until mid-February there are few good vacancies. By April, good vacancies are sorted out and a recession is formed. New ones will start in May, but “let’s go after the holidays”. Surprisingly, there is quite a demand in July, and in August it is rotten. I concluded for myself:

I continue to go to social services sometimes – in order not to lose shape, to adequately assess my salary wishes, and maybe even change my job someday.

I also arranged well for four acquaintances according to this scheme. And one from scratch in marketing.

You still have the question “how do I manage to work at 30 jobs?”. The answer is simple – I received an offer, but did not work there. So here the answer is “no way”, I hope you did not expect another)
