How is the concert business organized? Is it possible to earn 150k/month without programming

It would seem that difficult? Come to office. the star’s website, take the number of the concert director, put the date of the concert – everyone is happy. What can go wrong?

My name is Slava. I created and destroyed 6 nightclubs, passed 300 interviews and received 30 remote jobs, now I am engaged in system marketing.

In 2014, he opened his own concert agency. Worked with DDT, CHAIF, KNYAZZ, KUKRYNIKSY, PILOT, LSP, GUF, LUMEN and many others.

In this article, I described 7 main problems in this area, but experienced live players can easily throw up to a hundred)

1. Everything is NOT going according to plan

During the sale of tickets, GUF is imprisoned: they stop buying tickets; guitarist dies; declare national mourning. Government agencies, competitors, petitions, letters, calls with veiled threats, statements.

2. Kingdom of crooked calculations

When you consider the economy of a concert, you can not take into account:

– food

Free then you can really eat a lot. When you’re a beginner org, you enjoy drinking with the stars in a restaurant. When you are “experienced”, you sadly look at the foie gras and Hennessy floating past you, trying to figure out how to discuss the spending limit with the manager now, when you didn’t do this in advance, ask the waiter to talk about the absence of expensive dishes.

– Women

The artist takes women on tour. Organizer pays.

– The artist did not like:

There is no rear seat heating in the transfer, a “strange smell” in the hotel, 9 sandwiches in the dressing room, and 10 for the rider. You change the car, the hotel, cut the sandwiches.

– Tech. rider

In 3 gigs out of 5, you rush around the city like a scalded man in search of an intricate cord or a new batch of speakers. When you need it right now, the price tag grows 3 times. Organizer pays.

– Business lounge at the airport

If everyone knows your face, you feel uncomfortable in the common room, everyone asks you to take a picture. Organizer pays.

3. The greed of the fraer ruined

In the heat of savings, you can:

– save on loaders and carry a ton of iron on a hump.

It's hard to believe, but 3 students unloaded it and I'm on the hook. The soundman from the rental office with army humor led the process

– do not take a bodyguard and run from a crowd of fans

– take the cheapest transfer and spend an unforgettable night in hell

It was in the tour of the participants in the battle of psychics. The driver of the economy carrier “fumbled” and drove along the most stoned road to bypass the Rybinsk reservoir. The bus turned into a concrete mixer, and the driver, since he hardly slept, stopped every 30 minutes to pour water on himself so as not to fall asleep. For some reason, psychics could not predict such a turn.

4. Kurt Cobain

Someone in a concert frenzy throws a microphone, jumps into a drum or pours water on an expensive concert console. If you are the organizer, you pay for any event.

5. RAO: Authors’ Society Racket

When you first day in business, you know nothing about such a concert racket. This is a company that allegedly takes part of the money from the concert to pay the authors (as far as I remember, it falls only to the authors of the lyrics). They take money from the organizer of the concert “as much as you agree”. If you do not agree, a nice woman comes to you at the entrance to count visitors. They are all very nice women there, I think they are hired with experience in collecting debts.

They want money from you, even if your artist is a songwriter and performer himself and you pay him for the concert.

Then you learn from the artists that they don’t receive this money either.

6. I’m flying into the minuses

This is what a 140k loss looks like.

This is what a 140k loss looks like.

The organizer is a speculator. He pays the star a fee, provides delivery of the artist, advertising, rider (a list of technical and household Wishlist), a concert venue, advertising, etc., and everything that earns from above.

Often the organizer is a fan of the artist. And when this is the case, you don’t feel too sad about losing money, because this is your idol.

Do not be very sad while there is money, then you are sad and drink too much)

Out of 10 concerts: 3 are positive, 4 are negative and 3 are negative

*My stat for 2015.

Sometimes you can compensate for the minus at the expense of the artist. First, you “bend” for a low prepayment (up to 20% of the fee), then you bargain if the concert fails.

Alexey, we didn’t sell tickets for the concert *****. We will lose a lot of money if we do a concert with the current fee. Can you make a discount? If this is not possible, I will be forced to cancel the concert.

But if you gave 50% of the prepayment, then it usually doesn’t matter to you to hold a minus concert or cancel it. Since you will still lose this prepayment + advertising costs, prepayment for the site rental, a percentage of ticket sales points, air tickets if you have already bought them.

Prepayment to the artist 250k (with a fee of 500k)
Expenses before the arrival of artists in the city: 100k

If such a concert goes negative by 200k, it is more profitable to hold it. Swipe – lose 200k, cancel – lose 250k + 100k = 350k. Well, the artist will no longer work with you.

Prepayment to the artist 50k (with a fee of 500k)
Expenses before the arrival of artists in the city: 100k

Such a concert with a loss of 200k is more profitable to cancel. If you swipe, you will lose 200k, and if you don’t, you will lose 150k. This is also painful, but sometimes the amounts can be much larger.

If the prepayment was 50%, it’s normal for the artist to take half and take a day off, but it’s sad for the artist to take 10-20% of the fee and take a break. Therefore, the manager is much more likely to offer a discount so that the organizer still holds his concert.

Sometimes an organizational hallelujah happens and the artist goes for a percentage. That is, you do exactly the same thing: you buy tickets, find a venue, make advertisements, etc., but you no longer risk your money. And you are guaranteed to take 10% of the sale of tickets from the concert.

7. Stranded

And when you think something sucks and do not have a financial cushion, the money can take and run out.

Probably the organizers who have gone through covid will read this dock-like whining with a smile)
