Great power and great responsibility. All games about Spider-Man

The long-awaited release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 took place – the continuation of the acclaimed 2018 action film. The game is available only on PlayStation 5 and can delight fans of Spider-Man and the Marvel universe with a detailed New York, many superpowers and a fascinating plot. In honor of the release of the new product, we decided to dive into history and find many other interesting games about Spider-Man in order – on consoles and PC.

Until 1990s

On the computer

Spider-Man

Release year: 1982
Platforms: Atari 2600, Odyssey 2
Publisher: Parker Brothers

This is the oldest Spider-Man game and the debut game based on Marvel comics. In it, a wall climber must make his way to the top of a skyscraper, rescuing hostages along the way and defusing bombs left by the Green Goblin. Currently, the simplest graphics and primitive gameplay are not of much interest.

1990s

On the computer

The Amazing Spider-Man

Release year: 1990
Platforms: Game Boy, Amiga, MS-DOS, C-64, Atari ST
Publisher: Paragon\Nintendo

In this action film, Spider-Man faces blackmail from villains who have kidnapped the hero’s beloved Mary Jane. The hero must save his beloved, taking turns dealing with an analogue of the Sinister Six (Rhino, Venom, Mysterio, Hobgoblin, Scorpio and Otto Octavius).

Spider-Man: The Sinister Six

Release year: 1996
Platforms: MS-DOS
Publisher: Byron Preiss Multimedia

And this game can boast of originality. Roughly speaking, it brings the pages of a comic book onto the screen, because most often players will not have to fight, but carefully follow the story on behalf of Peter Parker. There will also be action moments from the first person, but what makes the game stand out is the puzzles and quest elements.

On consoles

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin

Release year: 1990
Platforms: Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, Sega CD
Publisher: Sega

The villains once again steal Mary Jane, but this time as Peter Parker’s wife. Another snag is that Wilson Fisk wants to cause a massive explosion – Spidey has limited time, so he must rush as fast as he can to save his beloved and the city. Electro, Lizard, Sandman and other villains will stand in the way of the hero. Here the graphics can be noted for the dark tone that is inherent in the Spider-Man comics of those times.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Release year: 1992
Platforms: Game Boy
Publisher: LJN

This game about Spider-Man was a continuation of the action movie already mentioned in the collection. This time the hero was accused of robbing a bank, although the people behind it were Hobgoblin, Lizard, Graviton (does anyone besides avid comic book fans know him?!), Mysterio and the Carnage symbiote. The gameplay has not changed fundamentally, but according to the plot, Spider must defeat enemies and clear his name.

Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six

Release year: 1992
Platforms: NES, Master System, Game Gear
Publisher: LJN/Flying Edge

The platformer boasts classic gameplay for the NES console, more familiar in the post-Soviet space as Dendy. Spider-Man explores rooftops, warehouses and factories to get even with the Sinister Six, which includes Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Hobgoblin, Vulture and Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Invasion of the Spider-Slayers

Release year: 1993
Platforms: Game Boy
Publisher: LJN

The final installment in the Spider-Man trilogy for the Game Boy. Like last time, the gameplay remains virtually unchanged, but the story is somewhat based on the comic. The hero will be pursued by technologically advanced robotic catchers, led by the genius Alistair Smith.

Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage

Release year: 1994
Platforms: SNES, Genesis
Publisher: LJN

In this unusual crossover, Spider-Man will team up with one of his arch-enemies, Venom. Together they must confront the mad Carnage, and the game is partly based on the comic book of the same name, in which the red symbiote and his companions terrorize New York. You can even play as Venom!

The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes

Release year: 1995
Platforms: SNES
Publisher: Epoch

The name “deadly enemies” speaks for itself – Spidey is in yet another scrape in which he will have to defeat mechanical catchers led by Alistair Smith, Beetle, Lizard, Mysterio, Green Goblin, Scorpion, Venom, Doctor Octopus and Carnage. Several other Marvel superheroes like the Human Torch will help keep the hero’s morale up during cutscenes.

Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety

Release year: 1995
Platforms: SNES, Genesis
Publisher: Acclaim Entertainment

In this old Spider-Man game, the hero will team up with Venom again, following the plot of the cult comic book “Deadly Defender”. Without delving into the plot, all you need to know is that Spidey and his new ally wanted to restore justice and help the poor community. The gameplay is similar to Maximum Carnage.

Spider-Man

Release year: 1995
Platforms: SNES, Genesis
Publisher: LJN/Acclaim Entertainment

This game is based on the legendary 1994 Spider-Man animated series. Therefore, fans will immediately recognize familiar character designs and old enemies. Players will have to visit the editorial office of The Daily Bugle, a construction site, laboratories and other locations, and the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and other sworn enemies from the animated show will stand in the way of Spider.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Web of Fire

Release year: 1996
Platforms: 32X
Publisher: Sega

This time, Spider-Man will not be alone again, but Daredevil, the blinded defender of New York, will help him in his heroic everyday life. The gameplay is quite familiar for Sega consoles, and the main task is to deal with small enemies and boss villains, but this time they are very exotic: Dragon Man, Blitz, Termite and other not the most famous Marvel characters.

2000s

From this time on, Spider-Man begins his march through three-dimensional space (but, of course, there were 2D games on a number of platforms, including Java). And the first 3D game about a wall climber was the legendary Spider-Man, originally released on PlayStation One.

On the computer

Spider-Man

Release year: 2000
Platforms: PlayStation, Game Boy Color, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PC
Publisher: Activision

It was with this legendary game that Spider-Man began his march in three-dimensional space. It is imbued with the spirit of classic comics, and many Marvel heroes appear as cameos: the Punisher, Daredevil and even Captain America. The plot revolves around Doctor Octopus and Carnage, who filled the city with poisonous gas. Spidey must stop the villains, meeting Venom, Mysterio and other enemies along the way. Here the developers laid the foundations for many parts of the Spider-Man series for many years to come.

Spider-Man

Release year: 2002
Platforms: Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC
Publisher: Activision

The game was originally intended to be an updated version of the 2000 adventure, but then the incredibly successful Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire was released. Some of the moments have been expanded upon and are not consistent with the film, such as when Peter sneaked into a warehouse with an army of bandits to avenge his uncle. You will also have to fight the Shocker, the Vulture and other villains who were not in the film. The gameplay is similar to the previous game: flying on the web is limited, and Spidey can use several hits and web tricks.

Spider-Man 2

Release year: 2004
Platforms: PC
Publisher: Activision

This part of Spider-Man comes in order after the previous game and is dedicated to the film “Spider-Man 2” by Sam Raimi, but the computer version turned out to be quite mediocre in comparison with its counterparts on older consoles. There is no open world, and the combat system consists of only a few hits. You can only cling to certain icons that are absurdly illuminated in the air. The plot is very different from the film, but the beginning and ending are quite canonical.

Ultimate Spider-Man

Release year: 2005
Platforms: Game Boy Advance, GameCube, Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo DS
Publisher: Activision

You could say that this open world adventure is literally a comic book come to life, which is why the graphics look stylish even now. The plot is based on the comics of the Ultimate Marvel universe, and in some tasks you will play as a huge Venom, who can hit with whip tentacles. Before the battle with various bosses, including Rhino, Electro and Green Goblin, there will be a dynamic chase.

Spider-Man 3

Release year: 2007
Platforms: Game Boy Advance, Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable
Publisher: Activision

The final installment in the list of Spider-Man games based on Sam Raimi’s trilogy. As always, the plot has some differences from the film and new characters, and the key points from the console second part are preserved: you can freely explore New York and complete challenges. As for the story missions, you will have to meet the Lizard, Kraven the Hunter and other villains in different situations.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe

Release year: 2007
Platforms: Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable
Publisher: Activision

The main feature of Friend or Foe is that now Spider-Man will not be alone. During the passage, you can switch to allies in the form of different heroes and villains: Black Cat, Green Goblin, Iron Fist. It is noteworthy that the plot shows a new look at the universe of Raimi’s films – the characters who died in the films remained alive.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Release year: 2008
Platforms: Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Xbox 360
Publisher: Activision

A distinctive feature of Web of Shadows is that the game has several endings that depend on Spider-Man’s good or evil deeds. He is free to act badly under the influence of the symbiote, or to resist the black suit and follow his principles. The plot is quite dark – New York is suffering from infection with symbiotes, and during the course of the game you will have to fight with the infected Wolverine and Black Cat. The combat system is aggressive and allows you to fight on walls and in the air.

On consoles/mobile platforms

Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six

Release year: 2001
Platforms: Game Boy Color
Publisher: Activision

This time it was not Mary Jane who was kidnapped, but May Parker, Spider-Man’s beloved aunt. The hero will have to go on a crusade against the Sinister Six, reassembled by Doctor Octopus. In addition to the leader himself, it includes Mysterio, Sandman, Vulture, Scorpio and Kraven. Levels are divided into several stages, and at the end there are battles against bosses.

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro

Release year: 2001
Platforms: PlayStation
Publisher: Activision

The direct sequel to 2000’s Spider-Man didn’t make any major changes, but the plot became darker, as did the color palette of the levels. Many new costumes have appeared, and the bosses have several unique mechanics: you can’t just beat them with your fists. For example, to defeat the Lizard you need to make an antidote in a mini-game.

Spider-Man: Mysterio’s Menace

Release year: 2001
Platforms: Game Boy Advance
Publisher: Activision

According to the list of games about Spider-Man, this part became a branch after Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro. However, instead of 3D battles, there are side-scrolling levels, and the central villain is Mysterio, whom Spider-Man defeated in the first part. The interface and character designs are similar to the 2000 and 2001 games.

Spider-Man 2

Release year: 2004
Platforms: Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, N-Gage, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable
Publisher: Activision

And now we will talk about the full version of Spider-Man 2. Unlike the PC, the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox had an open world with many activities and challenges. It was in this rather old game about Spider-Man that it was first possible to swing freely on the web and perform tricks with it, for example, clinging to poles. The plot partly follows the film of the same name, but many new characters appear, including Black Cat and Mysterio.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York

Release year: 2006
Platforms: Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, Mobile
Publisher: Activision

A fairly common beat-em-up for its platforms in the world of Ultimate Spider-Man, it stands out for one of its most striking features – the ability to get used to the role of the Green Goblin. As a mutated big man, players fight the S.H.I.E.L.D. and police officers, but in the role of Spider-Man you will have to save passers-by and interfere with the Goblin’s plans to create an army of mutants similar to himself.

Spider-Man: Toxic City

Release year: 2009
Platforms: Mobile
Publisher: Marvel Comics

We can say that in this mobile game about Spider-Man the authors decided to “go back to the nineties”, because the gameplay is quite simple and is at the level of games from Sega or Dendy. But the graphics boast bright colors and the style of the Ultimate universe. Players must take down an army of bandits in side-scrolling levels, occasionally getting sidetracked by boss fights like Rhino or Doctor Octopus.

2010s

On the computer

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

Release year: 2010
Platforms: Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, PC
Publisher: Activision

The action cannot boast of an open world, but unique levels put players in different situations and have their own style, because the game has four Spider-Men from different universes: the dark noir, technological Spider-Man 2099, the perfect Spider-Man in a symbiotic suit and Everyone’s favorite classic wall climber. The boss fights are quite original and have interesting ideas, but fighting the generic dummies can get boring.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Release year: 2012
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Android, iOS, Mobile, Wii U, Windows Phone, PlayStation Vita, PC
Publisher: Activision

This open world Spider-Man game is based on the universe of The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield. The plot in it became an epilogue to the film. The experiments of Curt Connors (Lizard) continued, which led to the emergence of “hybrids” – creepy animal-like mutants. In the open world, you can perform side activities and look for collectibles, and you will have to fight with the mutants Rhino, Scorpio and Lizard. Also, a mechanical robot catcher will hunt for Spider.

Platforms: Android, iOS, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC

But the gameplay has remained virtually unchanged – players have access to New York and side activities in the city for exploration, and as the story progresses they will have to face Shocker, Black Cat, Electro and even Carnage.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Release year: 2018
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC (remastered)

According to many, Insomniac Games managed to do best Spider-Man game. It features an independent universe, and the plot revolves around Peter Parker, who has been engaged in heroic activities for several years. During this time, he was able to study many gadgets, and later various costumes would open in his arsenal – they would help in the fight against Mister Negative, Scorpio, Shocker, Rhino and other villains.

On consoles/mobile platforms

Spider-Man: Edge of Time

Release year: 2011
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360
Publisher: Activision

This sequel to Shattered Dimensions has not been released on PC. Probably due to somewhat simplified mechanics and only two spider-men – the original Peter Parker and Spider-Man 2099. One of the main bosses will be Anti-Venom, and towards the end of the game he will merge with Doctor Octopus – it turned out to be an eerie sight.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem

Release year: 2013
Platforms: iOS, Android
Publisher: Gameloft

For mobile platforms, this is a rather unusual game – it is based on the Ultimate Spider-Man universe and is a full-fledged single playthrough with several levels, bosses and leveling up the Spider himself. The visual style again refers to comics, and this is also expressed in the interface.

Spider-Man Unlimited

Release year: 2013
Platforms: iOS, Android, Windows Phone

Unfortunately, this Spider-Man game cannot be officially accessed, as the mobile runner was closed several years ago. It boasted literally hundreds of different versions of Spider-Men from different universes, as well as crossovers, including with the film Avengers: Endgame. In addition to simple races for the sake of records, it was possible to go through the story with cutscenes and various villains: the Green Goblin, Mysterio, the Vulture and others.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Release year: 2020
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC

In the list of all Spider-Man games, this part is between the first and second Marvel’s Spider-Man. Miles Morales is set to replace Peter Parker as the city’s protector. This time New York is covered in snow, and one of the main enemies, along with Rhino, will be the Predator, a relative of Miles. Also, during additional activities, you can open a battle with the Vulture. This Spider-Man game turned out similar to the previous one, but has a different narrative tone and atmosphere.
