Experience in developing VR simulators in 2021 based on HTC Vive. Part 2

Once again, greetings to the readers of Habr. I continue to share my experience of the process of creating VR simulators developed by our team this year.

A few days ago, our team returned from Vladivostok. Successfully delivered to the customer and passed all tests virtual welding simulator

Unity was chosen as the base. As VR – HTC Vive Cosmos Elite + 3 Trackers.

Tracker pins on a semi-automatic grip are connected to the start key.

Assigned tasks:

  • study of the functionality and basic principles of work on the welding machine

  • training in practical rules for the use of welding equipment

  • reproduces the process: manual arc welding

  • reproduces the process: semi-automatic welding

  • automatically generates statistics on the result of exercise

Hardware requirements:

  • swivel bracket for camera placement

  • mounts for electrode holder and torch

  • mask mount

  • bar for fixing the workpiece, adjustable in height

  • workpieces for welding

  • rack

Manual “welding”

Required features:

  • visualization of the welding machine

  • realistic simulation of the sound of welding in the virtual world

  • imitation of work with a welding machine

  • matching the virtual scene in real time with the student’s actions on the controls

  • display on the monitor screen of the current parameters of the simulated welding process

  • statistical processing of results

  • examining the virtual weld after completing the exercise from different angles and different distances

  • the ability to choose exercises from a set

  • the ability to choose a workpiece for welding

  • display of the welding process in three-dimensional space using: virtual reality glasses, computer monitor

  • change the amperage for manual welding

  • change the wire feed speed for semi-automatic welding

  • acquire basic motor skills in ignition and arc maintenance

  • location simulating a welding room

  • mode of simulating the process of consumption and changing the electrode in the mode of manual arc welding

  • formation of statistics on the results of exercises
