DevDay podcast, or what’s wrong with online meetups

We recorded our podcast. Even before getting involved, we understood perfectly well that this topic can hardly be called trendy. Some people generally think that she is already closer to the Clubhouse. But our goal was not to poke around, but to solve a very specific task – to defeat the gloom of online.

DevDay

2GIS has been hosting meetups called DevDay since 2012. During this time, they gathered about 50 times to discuss both hard-hardcore topics and product-theoretical ones. The format is usual for meetups – two or three interesting speakers, cool communication, funny afterparty. Everything was very cool and often we even had to refuse many people, since it was corny that they could not accommodate everyone in the large conference room of the office.

What’s wrong with online

With the advent of quarantine, the shop had to be closed and go online. Two meetups were held in this format: they talked about C ++ and about what the work of a product is.

An indisputable plus of online is that you can call a speaker from any location. So, while in Novosibirsk, we managed to communicate with Andrey Aksyonov and Alexandra Kulachikova from Moscow.

But there is also an obvious disadvantage – we could not repeat the offline energy. Still, “talking to the TV” between chores and watching Instagram is not the same as breaking out to a meeting with like-minded people and completely immersed in the topic. The speakers felt it and said that there was not enough emotion.

We looked at how who solves this problem, and realized that the most correct thing for us is to look for a different format and wait for the opportunity to meet offline.

This is how the DevDay podcast came about. The podcast format allows you not to adjust in time and constantly look at the screen, but to launch it in the background at a convenient time. Yes, and it is more convenient to agree with the speakers about the time of recording. Separately, I note that a dialogue is always more interesting than a monologue.

The first issues were written on the knee. An ordinary recorder, headphones from an iPhone. Before ordering beautiful retro microphones and smearing myself with sound-absorbing panels, I wanted to test the hypothesis “can I speak coherently for at least 20 minutes?” It turned out not very coherent, but acceptable. Especially if you believe in yourself that you will gradually get better. And so far I’m lucky with interesting guests.

The latest issues were already written on microphones on stands and with a person who understands how to write all this correctly.

By the way, about guests and topics. One way or another, they are associated with 2GIS, ecosystem companies and their activities. That is, approximately 100,500 topics from different areas of IT and business.

What the first five issues are about

5. School 21

Conversation with Ivan Chubchenko, director of School 21 in Novosibirsk. Discussed:

  • what does 2GIS and Sber have to do with it;

  • is there a chance to enter if the knowledge in programming is zero, and the competition is wild. And how the selection proceeds in general;

  • what are the features of teaching without teachers;

  • what is wrong with the modern education system and where in all this is the place of the “School”.

Plans

In the next issue, I would like to talk with Ilya Taratukhin. A little about our office in St. Petersburg, but more about how the head of the front-end infrastructure team decided to return to 2GIS as the head of the software development office.

If we talk about more long-term plans, then I would like to continue – to find interesting topics and speakers. And you already want your own micro-studio with the same panels and microphones.

If you are interested in learning more about 2GIS and ecosystem companies, processes and cases – write in the comments, in a personal or in Telegram… Let’s choose the most interesting and record the episode.

And of course like it, hit the bell, tell your friends, share your opinions – what goes in, what does not go, where to download the topic and with whom.
