What's good about daily coffee?

Regular consumption of moderate amounts of coffee and caffeine protects against multiple cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, according to new researchpublished in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism of the Endocrinology Society.

Coffee reduces the risk of newly diagnosed cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CM), which is manifested in the coexistence of at least two cardiometabolic diseases.

The prevalence of people with multiple cardiometabolic diseases, or CM, is a growing public health problem as populations around the world age, the study notes.

Coffee and caffeine consumption may play an important protective role in almost all stages of CM development, the researchers found.

How much coffee to drink

Consuming 3-4 cups of coffee, or equivalent to 200-300 mg of caffeine per day, reduces the risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity in people without any cardiometabolic diseases.

The study found that compared to non-coffee drinkers or those drinking less than 100 mg of caffeine per day, drinking 200-300 mg of caffeine per day reduced the risk of CM by 48.1% or 40.7%. Maybe this is due to the fact that caffeine increases dopamine sensitivity.

Chaofu Ke and his colleagues draw their conclusions from data from the UK Biobank, a large and detailed longitudinal dietary study of more than 500,000 participants aged 37-73 years. The study excluded individuals who had mixed information about caffeine consumption. The final participant pool included a total of 172,315 individuals who did not have any cardiometabolic disease at baseline. And these people were defined as the heavy caffeine use sample. It also analyzed a sample of 188,091 people who consumed moderate amounts of coffee or only tea.

Progress of the study

Participants' cardiometabolic disease outcomes were determined from self-reported health status, primary care data, inpatient hospital data, and data from the UK Biobank-linked death registry.

Coffee and caffeine intake at all levels was inversely associated with the risk of first-time CM in participants without cardiometabolic disease. Those who safely consume full doses of coffee or caffeine are least likely to end up in the hospital with the risk of cardiometabolic diseases.

The results highlight that encouraging coffee or caffeine consumption as a habit in healthy individuals may have far-reaching benefits for the prevention of CM.

Closing the Research Gap

Numerous epidemiological studies have found a protective effect of coffee, tea and caffeine consumption on the risk of developing one cardiometabolic disease. However, the potential impact of these drinks on the development of CM at the biological level is unknown.

The research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Key Laboratory of Geriatric Diseases and Immunology Project of the Ministry of Education, and the Research on Key Technologies for the Prevention and Control of Major Diseases and Infectious Diseases in Suzhou.
