CS551: World’s first self-heating single board for -30 ° C

DFI, which manufactures industrial equipment, mainly electronic devices, introduced a single-board computer with an auto-heating function. Why does a computer need this function? In order to work at subzero temperatures.

But the board has other advantages as well, including high performance. The developers have created their device so that companies create powerful portable PCs on its basis that can work stably in extreme conditions – even in the heat, even in the cold. The size of the device is 3.5 inches, and it is called CS551.

Small but smart

Compared to most desktop motherboards, this single board is very small. So, in the vast majority of cases, desktop motherboards are scaled down to the Mini-ITX form factor (195 mm (7.7 ″) x 170 mm (6.7 ″).

DFI went even further and cut the board size by almost half compared to Mini-ITX. Its size is 146mm * 102mm, 3.5 inches. The board supports both not the fastest processors and high-performance chips, including Intel Core 8 and 9 generations. It is even compatible with the Intel C246 chipset, which allows EEC memory to be supported at the level of the Intel Xeon server, ensuring maximum system performance.

Neither heat nor cold

SBC is positioned as a board for outdoor use, mostly as an element of IoT systems, and in very low or, conversely, very high temperatures. Recommended values of environmental conditions for processors of the 8th and 9th generation from Intel are from up to 60 degrees Celsius.

As for the new single board, it is designed to operate over a temperature range of -30 ° C to 80 ° C. The trick is that the board is equipped with an autoheating system, so when the temperature drops to too low values, autoheating maintains optimal conditions for the processor.

Dynamic CPU and GPU throttling

In addition to the possibility of installing a powerful processor that will work without problems even in frosty conditions, the developers have added dynamic regulation of the CPU and GPU processor, which makes it possible to optimize the use of system resources in different operating modes.

Even when the ambient temperature rises to 80 ° C, the system regulates the resource usage of the processor and graphics card. Thus, in particular, the automatic shutdown of the PC is prevented and the stable operation of applications is ensured.

SSD of any size

There are 3.5-inch SBCs on the market, but most only support the M.2 2242 slot. The new SBC has the ability to work with the M.2 2280 form factor. So the storage capacity could be larger than usual, not to mention to increase the speed of data exchange.

With or without a cooler?

You can use a cooler, but there is also an opportunity to do without it, creating a silent and efficient system. PCs without a cooler are easier to work in the field, and their service life is significantly increased. So the CS551 for this reason alone can be considered one of the few options for use in smart outdoor projects.

The new single board is optimal for use in IoT systems deployed in the most extreme conditions. It can be used for:

  • AI video analysis.
  • Traffic flow analysis.
  • Industry with very low or, conversely, very high ambient temperatures.

Characteristics:

  • Desktop platform with a temperature range of -30 to +80 ° C.
  • Dynamic adjustment of CPU / GPU computing resources.
  • Advanced features with M.2 2280.
  • Support for passive cooling systems and active two-cooler systems.
  • Audio codec Realtek ALC262.
  • Two-port network controller 1GbE.
  • Four USB 3.1 ports and two DP interfaces.
  • Compatible with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and Linux.
  • Installation of processors up to i7-9700TE with eight cores.
  • RAM: 1 to 32 GB.

And finally, the question of price. The cost of a single board device, depending on the configuration, is $ 230.00 – $ 300.00.
