Due to quarantine measures in the early 20s, many people tried to work from their dachas in one way or another. Many dacha associations are mired in a fiber-optic web. But the heating issue remained unresolved for many. I heat my house with electricity, at the very peak of winter it comes out to fifteen thousand a month, comparable to renting an apartment in the city.
But time passed and I started thinking about saving. I looked for a long time at alternative types of thermal energy and eventually found a free heating method.
Gas, two three
The first thing that comes to mind is, of course, gas heating. In our DNT they have been talking about this since its foundation, but things are still there. If you pool gas, it will pay off in 20 years, and our DNT has not been able to come to an agreement for 20 years. You can use a gas holder, at a price plus or minus the same, but the operating features of the site also change – you can’t drill a well, plant a tree, or build a house in the place of a buried container. Now a smart gasification project has appeared, I don’t know how smart it is, but the price is more than 400 thousand for connection.
One firewood, two firewood, three firewood…
Heating with wood is tedious and unsafe, but it is much cheaper than using electricity. I asked my neighbors, they usually buy firewood by the truckload and about 20 thousand rubles are enough for them all winter. Firewood needs to be stacked and stored somewhere; a truckload of firewood is a large volume. I usually buy the minimum amount, so I can light a fire in the evenings, and I have a tandoor, so I somehow put half a cubic meter in the barn, and the rest is lying around not far from the barn. And 3 cubes lasts me for 2 years. The firewood is also garbage, so it’s better to build a boiler room for the house with a separate entrance – that’s a pretty penny.
The native land will feed and warm
An interesting heating option with heat pumps. If I lived in Sochi, the option would be simple and optimal. Any modern air conditioner can act as an air-to-air heat pump. I won’t get clever here about how to make four kilowatts of heat from a kilowatt of electricity, you can search on the topic. But the main problem is that I live in Moscow and have a dacha not far from Moscow, and budget heat pumps only work effectively at temperatures above zero.
But when the temperature is below zero, then a suitable option would be to either drill a well and pump heat from there, or bury the heat exchange circuit deeper than two meters, this option is called geothermal heating. In order for such a circuit to work, I need to dig up 200 m² for my house. Well, the price of a heat pump with liquid coolant is more than 300 thousand (depending on the manufacturer).
Convector and other electric heaters
Well, the easiest way is to hang a heater under each window and enjoy the warmth all year round. There are different automation options, from simple thermostats to smart devices that allow you to remotely control the temperature. Actually, I have these, and while I came to the dacha two, three, four times during the winter, I got by with them. But when I moved to the dacha during quarantine, heating began to cost me a pretty penny, namely about 15 thousand in the coldest months of winter.
Well, what can I say, back in school we were taught what efficiency is and that device losses go mainly into heat. So, with heaters, the beneficial effect is heat, so their efficiency is approximately 100%. What about computers? Well, if you don’t take the radiation from the monitor, then all the rest of the energy also turns into heat, which means this heat can be used wisely.
Next, I invented a bicycle, since they have long learned to use heat from radiation in data centers for the benefit of people. But I didn’t know about this, I was only thinking about how to save on heating the dacha.
Well, I thought that on Avito you can find many offers for crypto farms. The theme is that the complexity of calculations is constantly growing, old equipment quickly becomes outdated and becomes unprofitable, that is, farmers spend more on electricity and land rent than they receive in crypto. I looked and indeed Avito is full of cryptominers for the price of a heater.
In this mining calculator I figured that the miner would bring in at least a little more than it consumes electricity. Offers on Avito are constantly updated, the price of crypto is constantly changing, so it’s better to look at the facts. I bought Innosilicon a10 1 kilowatt for testing.
Then I registered for 2miners, I used the instructions for the currency that my miner produces and money flowed like a river into my wallet. Well, I also played around with the difficulty settings and output settings. I settled on withdrawing to Bitcoin, and made a slightly more economical mode than the default one; unexpectedly for me, this increased the speed of calculations.
But there was one moment that I perceived as a failure. The sound of this miner is very, very loud – 76 decibels, to make it clear, it is a little louder than a kitchen hood. My wife told me: “it’s either me or the dacha.” Of course, I chose my wife, but I didn’t throw away the miner either.
One neighbor in the country already knew a little about the topic of heating and told me. It turned out that there are expensive units that are connected to the heating main of the house and can be used to heat the whole house, and there are so-called noise boxes that allow you to isolate miners for 4-5 thousand rubles. I thought for a couple of days and bought one. And voila, it is now quieter than a refrigerator. Noise boxes come in different shapes, I probably chose not the most optimal one and am going to remake it, but I wanted to quickly test my idea.
Next, I registered on a crypto exchange BYBIT, this is a Chinese exchange and from there you can withdraw money to your card. I tried sending money to different wallets, but in the end I settled on the cryptocurrency exchange wallet. Since I didn’t intend to save cryptocurrency, so as not to spend money on commissions, I put it here directly to withdraw it immediately.
Well, actually, now it’s like I’m paying one kilowatt less for heating. Unfortunately, not zero, since one kilowatt is not enough to heat the entire house, but electric heaters are turned on less often.
It can also be used to protect your house from freezing if you don’t live there but come on weekends or holidays. Many people have a staircase in the middle of their house and the space underneath is filled with junk. This happened to me too, and now instead of junk there is a box from which warm air very quickly comes out. Due to the high air flow speed, thermal energy is evenly distributed between floors. 2miners has a telegram bot that can be configured to notify you when the miner is unavailable, so if there is any problem with the electricity or with the miner, you will know about it in 10 minutes and can take some action.
PS: The topic fascinated me and in the summer I want to completely redo the heating, because in the summer you can use the heat to heat the pool and heat the water, and in the winter you can save even more. If you have done similar things, please share your experience.
