Physicists of NUST “MISiS” together with colleagues from the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy) and STC UP RAS developed a technology that makes invisible various elongated objects, such as antennas and various sensors, aircraft landing gear, ship masts and airport towers. The basis of the invention is innovative metamaterialsuppressing scattering of the electrical type of an object.

Any elongated metal object, for example, antennas or cell towers, including 5G, has a response – a signal that appears in response to an impact – of an electrical type. To hide such an object from radars, it is necessary that it begins to scatter light, like an object with a magnetic response, which in itself is very weak. This was accomplished by scientists from the Russian-Italian scientific collaboration, as part of the project “ANASTASIA” (Advanced Non-radiating Architectures Scattering Tenuously And Sustaining Invisible Anapoles), named in honor of the Grand Duchess of the Russian Empire Anastasia Romanova.

“We came up with a special coating based on an ideal magnetic dipole diffuser that turns an elongated metal object with an electric response into an object with a magnetic response, – said one of the developers, associate professor of the laboratory “Superconducting metamaterials” NITU “MISiS”, Alexei Basharin. – This became possible due to the anapole state of the coating material, which lowers the scattering of the electrical type to the level of magnetic and even lower. As a result, such an object becomes invisible. “

The first of the possible applications of the new coating will be STELS technology for military and civilian purposes – in order to hide various elongated objects, such as aircraft chassis, antennas and various sensors, ship masts and airport towers. If the task of hiding these objects from enemy radars is trivial, the developers emphasize, then the task of electromagnetic compatibility of antennas on satellites is very important so that the same antennas do not affect each other. And this will be possible only if they are invisible.

The method will help hide the structures of airports, operator towers so that they do not interfere with radar and communications with pilots. In addition, the development will find application in the so-called “Magnetic light” tasks, i.e. where amplification of various magnetic phenomena is necessary: in nano-antennas, nano-lasers, etc.

“The second idea put forward in this work is that we were able to develop a coating that makes the impedance of the cylinder equal to the impedance of the surrounding space due to the special form of a sinusoidal metamaterial. This, in turn, gives an effect in which the electromagnetic wave incident on such an object completely does not notice the cylinder and passes through it without hindrance. An important progress of our work is that we applied a flat coating, and not bulk heavy structures, ” – added Alex Basharin.

The research team is a theoretical work and demonstrates new methods and open effects. The next stage of the project and the immediate goal, according to the developers, is to learn how to reduce the magnetic response of elongated metal structures.

“We have already deduced the necessary theory for supertoroid configurations earlier, now it remains to show this experimentally. Thus, we will come closer to solving the problem of complete invisibility. Although it is impossible to create perfect invisibility, according to the optical theorem, it is within our power to take a big step towards this, ”Basharin concluded.

The result is published in an international scientific journal. Scientific Report.
