Cost Analysis of the Brightest LED Bulbs

Finding yourself at the store counter or looking at the prices for LED lamps in the store, you want to understand – are you overpaying for the product and how much should a light bulb cost in general. It is my view on the pricing policy of these products that I would like to present to you today, perhaps this is not the ultimate truth, but still some statistics will be better than none.

For our research we used data from our project – Domorost. Under the hood there is a crawler (which runs around the network and searches for relevant information), a parser of goods and an interface for adding LED lamps from our users.

Our database is tens of thousands of light bulbs. It is important that we do not make super-cards for products and the bundle store + LED lamp generates a separate entity. Once a product entity gets into the database, it tries with all its might to keep itself up to date, updating its price and characteristics from the data source.

Now let's move on to our analytics. First, let's download all the lamps from with base E14 and E27these seem to be the most common light bulbs for the home. Let's look at the price chart.

11,145 lamps were found – quite representative, but these are not the brightest lamps. Nevertheless, let's look at this result. It turned out that the most expected price for a lamp is 90 rubles. Those for the price [100-190] For rubles you can find good lamps with these bases.

(We understand that the manufacturer needs profit and consider the range between the price mode and the mode multiplied by two as a completely accessible area for comfortable earnings)

But these are just some lamps, probably not the brightest, and our goal is precisely in them. And we present this analysis here only for further comparison of just some lamp with a given base with the brightest lamps from this category.

Further there will be some subjectivity. Personally, in my opinion, bright lamps for the home are 1000 – 1400 Lm. A higher luminous flux – these are already some kind of spotlights, which you will not screw into a chandelier. We do additional filtration.

Such lamps there were already significantly fewer found – 174. But it still seems that the sample is sufficient to draw conclusions.

The diagram is not so trivial, I would define it as noisy, the most expected price for this type of lamps is 200 rubles and it turns out that for [200-400] rubles we should receive bright lamps of excellent quality. Although, of course, this is some kind of “mathematics on bends”, because here two peaks are visible to the naked eye and the average price is closer to 150 rubles. Let's try to figure this out.

Knowing the specifics of the market and understanding that there are many one-day companies without a brand, which will write anything on their packaging for a minimal price, we will leave only more or less representatives that are well-known (do not confuse with quality representatives, here rather those that invest more in marketing than others, although these sets may overlap).

It seems that our intuition was right and we really did reduce the noise level. Thus, we confirmed that based on our data, LED lamps for the home with high brightness will cost as expected [200-400] rubles. At a lower price, you should be wary of the quality of the product, and at a higher price, expect some bold and high-quality technical innovations.

Again, this study has some assumptions:

1) despite the large base we are still far from saturation, but still need to be representative

2) we are not yet able to distinguish between regions of presence and here prices are not tied to any geography

3) We only consider prices of online stores for retail, there are no offline stores here, and they are usually much more expensive

Thank you for reading this point of view, I will be happy to read your clarifications in the comments!
