Checklist for selecting a contractor to develop a website or mobile application

For ease of use, we have divided the checklist into several blocks: requirements for the contractor, requirements for the product and requirements for promotion. By going through these points, you will be able to understand the competence and openness of the contractor, discuss working conditions with him before starting work, so that there are no surprises 🙂

Requirements for the contractor

1. Work experience. Check how many years the company has been operating on the market and what projects have already been implemented.

2. Portfolio. Look at examples of work to evaluate the quality and style of project execution.

3. Development team. Check who will work on your product: the number and quality of programmers, designers, testers and other specialists.

4. Technologies and programming languages. Find out what technologies are used in product development.

5. Development process. Find out what process is used to create applications: Agile, Waterfall or another method.

6. Cost and lead time of the product. Discuss all financial issues in advance and make sure you have enough time and funds to sell your product.

7. Agreement and terms of cooperation. Read the contract carefully before signing it, or better yet, give it to IT lawyers.

8. Communication and feedback. Make sure you have the opportunity to communicate directly with the development team and receive regular updates on the progress of the product. For example, weekly reports.

9. Customer reviews and company reputation. Review customer reviews about the company's work and its reputation in the market. If possible, request contact information of those with whom you can discuss the contractor’s work.

10. Format of payment for work. Select the work format for the product TM (payment for actual time spent), FP (payment for specific tasks). The first one is suitable for complex products, the second one is suitable for simple websites and applications. There will be prepayment or postpayment.

Product requirements

11. Product quality guarantees. Find out if the company provides a guarantee on their work and how long that guarantee lasts. And also what measures are being taken to ensure high quality of the product.

12. Testing and debugging. Find out how your app is tested before release to ensure it is stable and functional.

13. Post-launch support. Find out what kind of support the company provides after the product is released: updates, bug fixes and other services.

14. Meeting deadlines and budget. Make sure that the team is ready to meet the deadlines and budget of the product, that working in the TM format is not just an endless bag of money for them.

15. Working with personal data of users. If your product will collect personal data from users, find out how the company protects this data and whether it complies with privacy laws.

16. Integration with other systems. If your product must interact with other systems (for example, 1C), check whether the development team can implement such integration.

17. Adaptation for different devices and operating systems. Make sure the product will work correctly on different devices and operating systems.

18. Multiplatform. If you are planning to create an application for multiple platforms (iOS, Android), check whether the development team can implement such a product.

19. Performance optimization. Find out what steps are being taken to optimize product performance and improve responsiveness.

20. Ease of use (usability). Make sure the product is user-friendly and intuitive for users. Request proof of these competencies.

Promotion Requirements

21. Marketing strategy. If you need help promoting a product, find out what marketing services the company offers.
