Automotive novelties of the future exhibition

In January 2023, over 3,000 exhibitors will showcase technical innovations and future trends at the world’s largest consumer electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas.
This is one of the most important consumer electronics shows: the Consumer Electronics Show, CES for short, in Las Vegas. From January 5-8, 2023, innovators from the global electronics industry will gather in Nevada’s Gaming City. In addition to mobile phones, TVs, cameras and all kinds of entertainment electronics, numerous new products from car manufacturers and suppliers are also on display.
Author Fabian Hoberg has put together an overview of the most interesting new products from the driver’s point of view.
Audi: Immerse yourself in new game worlds
Audi is bringing back to Las Vegas its VR platform it unveiled three years ago, but this time it’s ready for series production. Holoride Virtual Reality (VR) promises a whole new gaming experience for rear seat passengers. It transfers real-time data about the car into the virtual game world, for example, about movement: if the car turns left, the spaceship in the game also turns left. If Audi slows down, the spaceship slows down. The system will be available on the German market from 2023 and will be available for many games.
BMW: man and machine networked
For visitors to the show, it can be a pretty crazy experience: you put on virtual reality goggles, immerse yourself in a virtual world, but drive a real car in the real world. “Mixed Reality” is the name of a theme being shown at a closed venue in Las Vegas. It is only fitting that the Munich-based company provides a new look at future technologies, human-machine networking, sustainability and entertainment systems.
BMW’s second theme is likely to be more tangible. The manufacturer plans its “New Class” for 2025. The name is based on historical models such as the 1500 that were built between 1962 and 1972, but the new “New Class” will be the platform upon which BMW will build its electric vehicles in the future. BMW boss Oliver Zipse will deliver the keynote speech at the show.
Clevon: Autonom delivers cheaper
Clevon 1 from the American company Clevon is designed for fast delivery in urban areas. The autonomous and electric van delivers groceries right to your front door and is said to save up to 90 percent on costs compared to conventional transport. The idea is no longer a dream of the future: the system is already being used in Europe by DPD in the Netherlands.
Continental: displays and gauges
At CES 2023, supplier Continental among commercial vehicle tires, sensors and recycling ideas, will showcase a new chip for automated driving, It can process sensor data faster, consume less power and thus provide a longer range for electric vehicles. And something else to help autonomous driving: the new long-range lidar sensor is designed to detect relatively small obstacles, such as bricks, on the road, even at high speeds.
The 1.2 meter wide curved display spans the entire cab for even more in-cab enjoyment. There is also a widescreen head-up display. Here, the information is not projected onto the screen, as is usually the case, but onto a black frame at the bottom of the screen. Advantage: The display should be clearly visible in all lighting conditions.
Dodge: the muscle car will go electric
The Dodge brand, owned by the Stellantis group (including Peugeot, Fiat, Alfa, Jeep, Opel), is showing performance-spoiled Americans the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT BEV as a concept vehicle. The muscle car is electrically powered, but it’s designed to sound like a V8 muscle car and gives a glimpse of future Dodge muscle cars. In the US, too, there are signs pointing to electromobility. Various performance levels are planned. The most powerful engine should bring it up to 500 kW (680 hp).
Forvia: more hydrogen in the tank
New name, new products. Hella and Faurecia (formerly Bertrand Faure and Ecia) are behind the artificial name Forvia. At CES, Forvia is unveiling a new platform that can be used for fuel cell vehicles, as well as electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The new hydrogen storage system should hold up to 40 percent more H₂.
In the future, reactive dimming will provide greater driving comfort at night in vehicles with electronic rear and exterior mirrors. The screen brightness of the electronic outside rearview mirror is automatically adjusted based on the driver’s gaze monitoring as soon as the driver wants to observe traffic from behind.
Magna wants chameleon cars
Supplier Magna wants to showcase new solutions for safe and sustainable mobility in Las Vegas. To achieve better air resistance and therefore lower fuel consumption in the future, the company is working on a transforming surface. The shape of the car is changing to improve efficiency and functionality.
Mercedes: autonomous overtaking on the track
Mercedes-Benz is not showing real automotive innovation. For this, the Stuttgart-based company is giving insight into future assistance systems in the US, such as automatic lane change assistant. Equipped with this, the car should be able to overtake other vehicles on interstate and highways on its own, i.e. without any action on the part of the driver. Until now, the driver had to turn on the turn signal. Mercedes-Benz also intends to announce charging infrastructure news in the US at the show.
Peugeot: futuristic and electric
Peugeot presents its latest concept study, Inception. It must convince with innovative technology and extroverted design and represent a preview of the future design direction of the entire Stellantis group. You can already guess that the concept car will have a powerful electric drive, a large range and, possibly, autonomous driving. Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares will ceremonially present the study.
RAM: the electric pickup revolution
No show in the US is complete without pickup trucks. After Ford built the F150 Lightning and GM Silverado EV as electric-powered stock vehicles for a long time, GM subsidiary RAM now introduces the Revolution 1500 BEV Concept. The study is scheduled to be put into mass production in 2024. With the most powerful battery, a range of about 800 kilometers is possible, but variants with a lower battery capacity are also planned. Charging power: 150 kW on DC speakers.
VW: electric Passat eagerly awaited
Finally, it will be officially presented at CES. From a previous study ID. Aero will be ID.7. As an electric counterpart to the VW Passat, the ID.7 should convince sedan buyers of the future. Key data so far: almost five meters in length, a 77 kWh battery and a range of more than 600 kilometers. As already shown in the ID.3 update, VW now uses a 14-inch and relatively thin display in the cabin.
Warm belts instead of warm words
Supplier ZF is focusing on comfort at CES. After heating the seats and steering wheel, a heated seat belt appeared. ZF is planning mass production. In addition, the supplier is presenting new ideas in the field of electrification, the concept of autonomous shuttles, charging options and a two-speed transmission for electric vehicles.
