What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an IT competition in which young teams (programmers, designers and project managers) in an intensive and brainstorming mode solve a technical task (problem) assigned to them or propose ideas for a new product, while trying to create at least the simplest prototype of the proposed product or show an example of a solution to the problem.

The name “hackathon” comes from the words “hack” (a quick solution to a problem using a creative approach) and “marathon”, which reflects both the atmosphere of creativity and endurance – hackathons usually last from 24 to 72 hours.

Hackathons often give participants a choice: they can either immerse themselves in developing a project individually, relying on their own strengths and ideas, or team up with like-minded people to form development teams. Regardless of the chosen approach, the culmination of the event is the presentation of the created solutions to an expert jury ready to evaluate the innovation, originality and potential of each work.
