After what time at work do you start working

When I started working in the 90s at Nienshanz, God bless her, the new employee started working very quickly. We start login, here we have files *.c, right here *.hhere’s a set of floppy disks with Borland C, and forward, dig from the fence until lunch. However, times are changing, but I did not notice these changes for a long time.

Well, or these changes began to occur later. In any case, while working in America (three different firms), and while working in France, I began to be useful literally from the second day. After that, I worked for three years in a tiny company, where there was no bureaucracy at all, and then I worked for 12 years in a very large Western company.

As I worked there, I acquired what I want to call ‘Company-skills‘. Remember, in the beginning it was hardware And softwareand then between them arose firmware? Also between soft skills And hard skills There is company skills. company skills it is knowledge of a heap of URLs, the ability to order accesses and knowledge of who approves what. Where to watch logs Kibana and where are the alerts Zabbix And Grafana. Where you can climb, and where they will give you a hand. These are logins in 8 different domains (the firm absorbed many smaller firms, and they were quietly digested in its gut. But domains resist digestion the longest). And a text file with a bunch of URLs and textual descriptions of what and where. This is the ability to correctly create an application in a home-grown XXX system. And the memory that in the XXX system, the login must be entered as simply ‘user‘, in the YYY system as DOMAIN\userand in ZZZ as user@domainotherwise it won’t work.

And a manager often has all the skills are soft skills + company skills

I already understood then how much baggage that is not directly related to hard skills. And, when the company decided to leave after, as they say, famous eventsI had to write KT (Knowledge Transfer) for quite a long time and describe a bunch of little things.

Then I went through a large number of interviews already in Russian companies, got acquainted in detail with the work in two and was able to ‘look behind the curtain’ a little in several more. By the way, I still experienced a culture shock.

Do you know what they call user accounts? User accounts!

Do you know what they call user accounts? User accounts!

However, the organization of affairs, it must be said, was well put. However, I realized that company skills this is not only my past that I left to others, but also what I myself have to master. And this volume is great. Maybe because of the partial attachment to DevOps and due to the fact that I am partly an admin. More URLs, More Tricks, More company skills.

At the same time, they themselves company skills it’s a clean overhead for all sides. For an employee, this is what he must learn, but this does not improve his resume in any way, and when moving to another company, all this will have to be mercilessly thrown away – everything will be different in another company!

For the company, this is a minus, because the employee does not immediately begin to benefit. In general, I got the impression that the first week I did almost nothing useful at all, in the first month I began to be a little useful, and after three months you can reach 70-80% of the productivity of the old-timer.

It’s funny, but the more automation in the company, the more you need Company-Skills. That is, automation really speeds up routine operations, but increases the entry threshold. Consider the options (of course, spherical and in vacuum):

a. when you make your exe, copy it to servers A, B and C. Handles!

b. when you make your exe, then run a special jenkins job, it will do everything itself. Where is jenkins? Here is the url. Try. So, you don’t have access. Let’s ask. For this we have a system of applications. Here is the url. Now you have access. But you still have to attach a file with a description of what and where to copy, yaml. Look at our designations. There is a wiki for this. Here is the url. No, no, server names cannot be written simply, certain synonyms must be written. And here it is necessary to put a gap. This is an old bug with us, otherwise it will not work.

Familiar? I myself am somewhat confused, many optimizations bring not only good, but also evil. More automation – more entry threshold, and with turnover after famous events the turnover is very high. And how do you find the right balance?

And how long did the half-work-in period take (when you reached 50% performance of the old-timer) and began to comfortably interact with all systems?
